    OBJECTIVE: The need for ultrasound flow phantoms to validate ultrasound systems requires the development of materials that can clearly visualize the flow inside for measurement purposes. METHODS: A transparent ultrasound flow phantom material composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (PVA-H) with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water solution manufactured using the freezing method and mixed with quartz glass powder to exhibit scattering effects is proposed. To achieve transparency of the hydrogel phantom, the refractive index (RI) was changed to match that of the glass by modifying the PVA concentration and the ratio of DMSO to water in the solvent. The feasibility of optical particle image velocimetry (PIV) was verified by comparing an acrylic rectangular cross-section channel with a rigid wall. After the feasibility tests, an ultrasound flow phantom was fabricated to conduct ultrasound B-mode visualization and Doppler-PIV comparison. DISCUSSION: The results revealed that the PIV measured through PVA-H material exhibited 0.8% error in the measured maximum velocity compared with PIV through the acrylic material. B-mode images are similar to real tissue visualization with a limitation of a higher sound velocity, when compared with human tissue, of 1792 m/s. Doppler measurement of the phantom revealed approximately 120% and 19% overestimation of maximum and mean velocities, respectively, compared with those from PIV. CONCLUSION: The proposed material possesses the advantage of the single-phantom ability to improve the ultrasound flow phantom for validation of flow.

    This paper describes the detectability of eddy current testing (ECT) using directional eddy current for detection of in-plane fibre waviness in unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminate. Three different types of probes, such as circular driving, symmetrical driving and uniform driving probe, were proposed, and the waviness angle was extracted from the contour map of the ECT signal by applying a Canny filter and a Hough transform. By comparing both the waviness angle estimated by ECT and that obtained by an X-ray CT image, the standard deviation (precision) and root mean square error (accuracy) were evaluated to discuss the detectability of these probes. The directional uniform driving probe shows the best detectability and can detect fibre waviness with a waviness angle of more than 2° in unidirectional CFRP. The probe shows a root mean square error of 1.90° and a standard deviation of 4.49° between the actual waviness angle and the angle estimated by ECT.     <p>In this study, a repetitive unidirectional friction experiment was conducted on uniaxially compressed sample of metal powder in order to clarify the behavior of solid-state bonding on metal powder particles by simultaneous application of compressive and shearing force. Pure Cu powder was compressed under the normal stress of 1000 MPa to get uniaxially compressed sample with the target size of 20×20×0.25 mm3. The relationship between a normal load, a number of sliding cycles, and microstructural changes of samples after the unidirectional friction experiment was investigated by observing sample structures of fracture surfaces and cross-sections. As the results, it was found that the applied stress is more dominant in the particle bonding than the strain. In addition, it was suggested that the bonding of powder particles is proceeded as this order: (1) plastic deformation of particles; (2) grain refinement to a size of several micro-meter; (3) bonding of particles; (4) additional grain refinement to submicron size.</p>

    A new rehabilitation method is under developing for the treatment of paralyses caused by stroke. This method, the paired associative stimulation (PAS), stimulates both a motor cortex of a brain and a peripheral nerve of the affective muscle in the optimum time interval. In order to stimulate the peripheral nerve effectively, a new magnetic pulse generator is developed, which controls the stimulation intensity not by the applied voltage but by the cycle number of waves. This power supply has three advantages as compared to the commercial magnetic pulse generator. (1) Compact and light weight. (2) Pulse voltage is low and fixed under 600V. (3) The stimulation intensity is controlled by the number of waves from 1 cycle to 8 cycles.

    In vitro blood vessel biomodeling with realistic mechanical properties and geometrical structures is helpful for training in surgical procedures, especial those used in endovascular treatment. Poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (PVA-H), which is made of Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and water, may be useful as a material for blood vessel biomodeling due to its low surface friction resistance and good transparency. In order to simulate the mechanical properties of blood vessels, measurements of mechanical properties of PVA-H were carried out with a dynamic mechanical analyzer, and the storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") of PVA-H were obtained. PVA-Hs were prepared by the low-temperature crystallization method. They were made of PVA with various concentrations (C) and degrees of polymerization (DP), and made by blending two kinds of PVA having different DP or saponification values (SV). The G' and G" of PVA-H increased, as the C or DP of PVA increased, or as the proportion of PVA with higher DP or SV increased. These results indicate that it is possible to obtain PVA-H with desirable dynamic viscoelasticity. Furthermore, it is suggested that PVA-H is stable in the temperature range of 0°C to 40°C, indicating that biomodeling made of PVA-H should be available at 37°C, the physiological temperature. The dynamic viscoelasticity of PVA-H obtained was similar to that of the dog blood vessel measured in previous reports. In conclusion, PVA-H is suggested to be useful as a material of blood vessel biomodeling.

    An in-vitro work fluid to apply to Poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (PVA) model integrated in a circulation system are developed using glycerol. The index of refraction of the fluid is matched to that of PVA model and the model is connected to the circulation system with a pulsatile pump. The viscosity can also be changeable for matching the blood. Since the compliance of PVA model is similar to the arterial wall, the circulation system with PVA model will be helpful for comparison of flow dynamics in rigid wall or for evaluation of medical devices such as stent or coil touching on the artery. These topics are also strong relationship with the rupture of cerebral aneurysm that usually causes subarachnoidal hemorrhage (SAH) and sever morbidity.

    The alloying and composite consolidation process of materials using dynamic interparticle bonding process was studied. The relationship between the solidification conditions and the crystal grain refinement was clarified by evaluating the effects of the types of metals, their combinations, and consolidating conditions of alloy and compound.Pure powder and mixed powder were consolidated in the temperature range that promotes crystal grain growth, and the degree of crystallization or alloying/compositing of the solidified compact was evaluated. As a result, we were able to show a correlation between consolidation parameters and process temperature suitable for interparticle bonding. Based on the phenomenological parameters obtained in the research, we proposed a dynamic solidification model of the powder and a design concept for the composite material with controlled layer microstructure.

    Diamond-like carbon in which cobalt, which is a ferromagnetic element, is dispersed in nano clusters is introduced into the adhesive bonding interface of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP). By measuring the change of eddy current signals of Co-DLC on bonding interface with eddy current testing (ECT), which is one of electromagnetic nondestructive evaluation methods, nondestructive evaluation of the failure generated in the FRP adhesive bonding interface is enabled. It was revealed that even if the ECT probe is 10 mm away from Co-DLC, the damage caused to Co-DLC can be sufficiently detected. Although the adhesive strength decreased by 18% by introducing Co-DLC, the feasibility of this method is expected as a method that enables nondestructive evaluation of adhesive bonding.

    To create carbon fiber reinforced composite whose matrix is polymer alloy of polypropylene and polyamide (nylon) (PP/PA), the knowledge about the optimization of the design of interface between carbon fiber and PP/PA resin was investigated by taking into account interfacial shear stress and work of adhesion. The optimum interfacial shear stress and work of adhesion of carbon fiber and PP/PA resin are determined by different mechanism corresponding to the polarity of fiber and the structure of polymer alloy. In conclusion, to develop carbon fiber reinforced plastic composed of polymer alloy, it is important to select optimum chemical modification method of fiber surface in accordance with the components and structure of polymer alloy.

    This study has developed a nondestructive evaluation method of the laminate structure of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) on the scarfed surface by utilizing eddy current, aiming for an automation of the scarf adhesive repair for huge structures such as aircraft composed of CFRP. The technique able to automatically characterize the fiber orientation and to extrude the shape of the patch of respective laminate layer on the scarfed surface, which is important in scarf repair, was developed by utilizing Eddy current testing with a mutual induction differential type probe. Since the adhesive repair is performed not depending on the advanced skill and experience of professional repairmen with this technique, it is expected that the repair of huge structures composed of composite materials could be more reasonable and easier.

    Carbon fiber reinforced composites, which is composed with resin and carbon fiber, is expected as structural material instead of steel and aluminum alloy due to its superior specific strength and rigidity. However, nondestructive defect diagnosis method for the material has not been established yet. This study succeeded in the development of smart carbon fiber reinforced composites that can detect the occurrence of the defect by itself by electrochemical methods. This kind of composites does not lead the occurrence of inner defect because of not putting sensors inside the material, therefore, has high reliability as structure.
