    Abstract Two‐dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides, collectively known as MXenes (e.g., Ti3C2Tx), have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional physicochemical properties and wide‐ranging applications. In this study, we systematically explore the synthesis, functionalization, and catalytic performance of MXene modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for the degradation of the organic dye methylene blue (MB). The functionalization process is carefully characterized, revealing that PEG incorporation enhances the hydrophilicity, colloidal stability, and catalytic activity of MXene. Through detailed mechanistic studies, we elucidate the synergistic effects of the MXene framework and PEG functional groups, which collectively contribute to the accelerated degradation kinetics of MB. Remarkably, the PEG‐functionalized MXene achieves a first‐order rate constant of 0.16581 ± 0.030 min−1, demonstrating its superior catalytic efficiency. These findings not only highlight the transformative potential of organic molecule functionalization in tailoring MXene properties but also underscore its promise as a high‐performance material for advanced environmental remediation technologies. While many studies have focused on the degradation of MB dye, the use of MXene functionalized with PEG for this purpose remains relatively novel. Unlike traditional materials, MXene's excellent conductivity and hydrophilic properties, enhanced by PEG functionalization, present a promising alternative for dye degradation. Here a foundational understanding of MXene‐based composites and their application in sustainable water treatment processes.

    Abstract In this study, we report on the customization of multilayer MoS2‐FET transfer properties by melamine via surface charge doping. NMP was used as a solvent to create the melamine solution. After melamine doping, the multilayer MoS2’s charge carrier density was roughly doubled. After melamine doping, mobility was calculated to be around 28.57 cm−2V−1s−1, whereas the pristine's mobility was approximately 27.38 cm−2V−1s−1. The subthreshold swing of the doped device was ∼ 0.94 V/decade, which is less than the pristine device's ∼ 1.6 V/decade. The doped device demonstrated outstanding switching properties. A factor of greater than 7 was seen in the reduction of extracted contact resistance. The melamine molecule forces n‐doping on the multilayer MoS2, as seen by the left shift of the threshold voltage following the doping process. Following the doping procedure, the Raman spectrum's downward trending E2g and A1g peaks shows that the n‐type doping system's electron concentration is rising. Melamine functions as an n‐type dopant, as confirmed by XPS evidence. Melamine is confirmed to be present on the MoS2 surface by TOF‐SIMS and AFM measurements. Chemical doping might be a useful technique for improving the layered materials' electrical characteristics.

    Abstract Combining the photoisomerization of molecules with an electrical device is important for developing optoelectronic devices. Field effect transistors (FETs) with atomically thin channels are suitable for this purpose because the FET properties respond to chemical changes in molecules. Since the photoisomerization wavelength of the switching molecules can be tuned, complex logic operations can be realized if a specific molecule is delivered to the target FET of an integrated circuit. However, conventional techniques for transferring molecules, such as drop casting and sublimation, cannot efficiently realize this goal. In this study, we fabricated a MoS2 FET device combined with a microfluidic platform, wherein the MoS2 channel was in contact with the flow of an azobenzene solution in isopropyl alcohol as the solvent. UV radiation (365 nm) and thermal relaxation realize the cycle of trans- and cis-azobenzene states and the switching of the substantial FET properties. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using the solution for optical switching of the MoS2-FET, which can realize quick phase changes in the molecule and the delivery of the molecule to the target FET by a microfluidic platform.

    We report a precise measurement of the sensor behavior of the field effect transistor (FET) formed with the MoS2 channel when the channel part is exposed to Cl2 gas. The gas exposure and the electrical measurement of the MoS2 FET were executed with in situ ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) conditions in which the surface analysis techniques were equipped. This makes it possible to detect how much sensitivity the MoS2 FET can provide and understand the surface properties. With the Cl2 gas exposure to the channel, the plot of the drain current versus the gate voltage (Id-Vg curve) shifts monotonically toward the positive direction of Vg, suggesting that the adsorbate acts as an electron acceptor. The Id-Vg shifts are numerically estimated by measuring the onset of Id (threshold voltage, Vth) and the mobility as a function of the dosing amounts of the Cl2 gas. The behaviors of both the Vth shift and the mobility with the Cl2 dosing amount can be fitted with the Langmuir adsorption kinetics, which is typically seen in the uptake curve of molecule adsorption onto well-defined surfaces. This can be accounted for by a model where an impinging molecule occupies an empty site with a certain probability, and each adsorbate receives a certain amount of negative charge from the MoS2 surface up to the monolayer coverage. The charge transfer makes the Vth shifts. In addition, the mobility is reduced by the enhancement of the Coulomb scattering for the electron flow in the MoS2 channel by the accumulated charge. From the thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we concluded that the adsorbate that is responsible for the change of the FET property is the Cl atom that is dissociated from the Cl2 molecule. The monotonic shift of Vth with the coverage suggests that the MoS2 device sensor has a good sensitivity to detect 10-3 monolayers (ML) of adsorption corresponding to the ppb level sensor with an activation time of 1 s.

    Adsorption and diffusion of ammonia on an ice/Pt(111) surface were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). After exposing the crystalline ice film to ammonia molecules at 45 K, we have detected an intriguing feature at 1470 cm−1 in the FTIR spectra. This feature is derived from the ammonia adsorption on the ice with a characteristic structure which appears in thin film region. The peak intensity decreases gradually as the thickness of the substrate ice increases. In addition, we have detected a feature at 1260 cm−1 that appears after flashing the film to 113 K. The feature corresponds to the ammonia molecules which penetrate the ice surface and reach the ice/Pt(111) interface. Intriguingly, the intensity of this feature decreases with the ice thickness and there is a linear relation of the peak intensity of the features at 1470 cm−1 and 1260 cm−1. We propose a model that the solubility of the ammonia molecules is much higher for the thin ice film, whose structure is deformed from the ideal ice due to the presence of the metal substrate, than that for the ideal ice.

    A dispersion-compensation electron-energy-loss spectrometer which consists of two 90° spherical sectors has been constructedand its characteristics have been tested. We have obtained the detector current of 160 pA with the full-width at half maximum of 25 meV for the primary electron energy of 19.5 eV in the direct mode, where electrons passing through the monochromator are directly detected by the analyzer without reflection from a sample. The obtained characteristics have been discussed, and suggestions for the design of an advanced spectrometer have been given.

    窒化アルミニウム(AlN)は様々な機能を持つ材料として注目されている。N2ガスはアルミニウムとは反応しにくいので、AlN薄膜形成には化学気相成長などの方法が用いられる。しかし、我々は超高真空中でAl(111)表面に並進運動エネルギー1.8 eV以上の超音速N2分子線を照射すると室温でも直接窒化反応が起こることを見出した。この手法によって作製したAlN薄膜における窒素原子の深さ方向分布について、主に角度分解放射光XPSを用いて解析した。

    Al(111)表面の超音速N<SUB>2</SUB>分子線による運動エネルギー誘起窒化では表面温度473 Kでは直線状の吸着曲線が得られるが、373 Kではインキュベーション時間が確認され、室温ではさらにインキュベーション時間が長くなった。このようなインキュベーション時間の存在と大きな表面温度依存性はN原子の拡散を示唆している

    1. Introduction Molecular sensor technology is of great interest. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which is a layered material, can obtain an ultrathin film consisting of several atomic layers by a simple method such as an exfoliation technique. Since the MoS2 ultrathin film has a large specific surface area and its electronic properties are extremely sensitive to the change of the surface conditions, including adsorption of molecules on the surface. Then, it is attracting attention as a sensor device material that can detect trace amounts of target molecules with high accuracy [1]. In this study, we investigated changes in electrical characteristics when a field-effect transistor (FET) using MoS2 as a channel material comes into contact with a liquid. 2. Experimental After transferring a MoS2 ultra-thin film (three atomic layers) onto a SiO2/ p ++ Si substrate, a MoS2-FET device was generated through processes such as resist coating, electron beam lithography, and electrode material deposition (*). A microfluidic channel made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is adhered to the surface of this TiO2 / MoS2-FET device, and the solution is supplied from a syringe connected via a capillary to measure the electrical properties of the device in contact with the solution. (see Figure 1). 3. Results and Discussion A current (Id) flowing through source electrode and drain electrode with drain voltage of 100 mV was measured as a function of the gate voltage (Vg) applied to the Si substrate. Vg dependence of Id (Id-Vg plot) was obtained when isopropyl alcohol (IPA) was on the TiO2/MoS2-FET device through a microfluidic channel made of PDMS. When the velocity of IPA is almost zero, Id-Vg plot shown as the blue solid line was observed in Figure 2. After the syringe pump is turned on and the velocity of IPA reaches 80 mm / s, Id-Vg plot shown as the red solid line was observed. Then, it was found that the Id-Vg characteristics for the IPA flowing at 80mm/s is different from one for the IPA at 0mm/s. Next, we repeated the same processes again. The results for the second cycle are shown as dotted lines in the figure. It is clear that the difference between IPA at 0mm/s and IPA at 80mm/s is observed in the second cycle too. The results show that the Id increases with increase of the velocity of IPA for negative Vg. It has been confirmed that the electric property of MoS2-FET is very sensitive to the electric charge in the vicinity of MoS2 channel [1]. Then, the flow of the liquid might cause the change of the electric charge at the interface of the adsorbed IPA molecules and the surface, resulting in the change of the electric property of MoS2-FET in our experiment.     1. Introduction An application of the field effect transistor (FET) with an atomically thin Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) channel to sensors attracts attentions, where the adsorption of molecules on the channel is detected by the FET property. In this article, we obtained the photocurrent vs λ spectra from photo-current by injection of monochromatized light on the copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) deposited surface. 2. Experimental MoS2 flakes were exfoliated from a natural crystal by using the adhesive tape method on to the SiO2/p-type Si substrate. The electrodes are formed by 5 nm-thick Ti and 100-nm-thick Au. FET characterization was done under ultra-high vacuum condition [1]. Figure 1 (a) Drain current variation with the injection of the light of 650 nm. (b) Photo-current variation for several wavelengths after 2 Å CuPc deposition. 3. Results and Discussion Figure 1 (a) shows drain current variation with the injection of the light of 650 nm for 0.5 s in every 1 s. The photocurrent can be seen during the photo irradiation. The results for several wavelengths after 2 Å CuPc deposition show that the photocurrent has a large dependence on the wavelengths of the injecting light as shown in Figure 1(b). Figure 2 The photo-responsivity for (a) the pristine MoS2, (b) 2 Å CuPc and (c) 10 Å CuPc deposited cases. Figure 2 show the photo-responsivity as a function of the wavelength of the incident light for (a) the pristine MoS2, (b),(c) CuPc deposited cases. The plot for the pristine surface is fitted with three Gaussian peaks with the center wavelength of 550, 610, 650 nm, and an additional peak at 705 nm is employed for the sample with CuPc. These results indicate that the peak at 705 nm corresponds to the adsorption of CuPc. The technique can be employed for the molecular sensing with the chemical recognition capability. [1] Alam, I.     The vibration spectroscopy is one of the major chemical analysis techniques, which can reveal not only the functional group of the molecule, but also the bonding nature of the crystal. The hydrogen bonding is a critical interaction between molecules which determines the structure of the molecule assembly. In this work we develop a technique to map the hydrogen bonding using the scanning probe microscopes. Instead of observing the morphology of the crystal, we focus on obtaining the inelastic component of the tunneling current. By detecting the vibration mode corresponding to the O-H stretching mode with the effect of the formation of the hydrogen bonding, we successfully mapped the spatial distribution of the hydrogen bonding.

    For the chemical reactions on the surfaces, including catalytic reactions, some special sites of the surface like as the lattice defects play a critical role in the determination of the reaction path. However, the ratio of the number of defects against the total number of the surface atoms is tiny, which makes the chemical analysis difficult. STM can give local structure and electronic information. However, compare to the topography and the LDOS information, the spin information provided by ESR and NMR can give us higher sensitivity. In this research, we developed the techniques to identify the spin state of the molecules adsorbed on the surface.

    This group has set the research target on the designing, characterization and control of surfaces, which should provide infrastructure of the 'molecular architect'. Special attentions have been paid for the phenomena formed by the interaction between the molecular spins and the conduction electron. We have demonstrated that the Kondo resonance, which is a spin-screening effect of the conduction electrons for an isolated spin, can be used as a useful technique for characterizing the spin of magnetic molecules. This has been shown for the cases of the Cu corrole molecule and the porphyrin double-decker complex of Tb atom. For the latter, we showed that a dehydrogenation can switch ON/Off of the single molecule magnet (SMM) properties. In addition, we have developed spin-polarized STM (SP-STM) to characterize the direction of the spin in nano materials. This has been applied for the determination of the magnetic anisotropic energy (MAE) of Co bilayer film on Au(111) surface.

    Many organic compounds are currently synthesized. Each compound contains a carbon atom to which four different functional group is bonded so that not only the organic compound of interest but structural mirror images of the compound are will also be synthesized. Therefore, we attempted to develop new methods for synthesizing only the organic compound of interest by utilizing the nanotechnology and molecular-beam technology that controls the speed of the molecules of the reaction of the starting materials. In the results of this study, it was found to be sufficiently control the speed of the reaction molecules. In addition, it becomes possible to detect molecules that were the products in the reaction. We think that it is possible to reach the stage of applying the new approach.

    Electron conductance through a single molecule has attracted attentions because it is possible to control structures, electronic states and functional groups of the molecules. In spite of intensive studies, there are many questions left unanswered. In this study, we tried to measure the path by detecting vibrational modes of the molecules which are caused by the current. We employed scanning tunneling microscope (STM) setting for this purpose, in which the substrate metal surface is an electrode and the STM-tip is the other electrode. The results showed that almost complete vibrational signals of the alkanethiol molecule can be detected. The result was compared with a density-functional calculation, which shows an excellent agreement. In addition, we have found that a certain portion of the current are hopping between neighboring molecules, instead of confined in a single molecule from one electrode to the other.

    In 2006, we have performed the experiment about the adsorbate diffusion on solid surfaces by using super sonic molecular beam apparatus combined with ultra high vacuum chamber. From the analysis of the Fourier transformed infrared spectra obtained after a stepped Pt(997) surface was exposed to CO molecules and subsequently to energy-controlled Ne or Ar atoms, the activation energy of the diffusion of CO adsorbed at terrace site and step site were obtained. In 2007, we examined the mechanism of the relaxation of the translational energy of adsorbates on surfaces during the diffusion process by the use of collision induced diffusion phenomena as follows: After a Pt(997) surface was exposed to CO molecules with a coverage of 0.033 ML, it was exposed to Ne or Ar atoms with a translational energy. If the friction applied to CO molecules at terrace site is low, they can migrate long distances after a collision imparts a sufficiently high kinetic energy. If the friction is large, they will stop immediately after the collision. Then, the friction can be estimated from the distribution of CO molecules after the collision with rare gas atoms. However, since the translational energy of CO molecule and its direction depend on the arrangement of the CO molecule and the rare gas atom upon the collision, we employed molecular dynamics calculation and the calculational results were compared with experimental results. From the comparison, the friction coefficient of CO on the Pt surface was estimated to be 8x10^<12> sec^<-1>.

To perform the experiment, inlet of gaseous atoms and molecules, Laser detonation apparatus, STM apparatus to observe the surface reaction, and UHV chamber are required. Among them, Laser detonation apparatus and STM were developed in the research. 1. Laser detonation apparatus Laser detonation apparatus is composed of Laser source, mirrors to adjust the Laser direction, a focusing mirror to focus the Laser, gas vessel with a nozzle, pipes through which gases are led. The translational energy of atoms and molecules are measured from the time difference between Laser discharge and time of the arrival of the molecule at the mass spectrometer. Timing control system was developed to measure the time of the arrival of the molecule at the mass spectrometer. 2. STM The species, structure and position of the molecule on the surface after the sample surface is irradiated with high-speed molecules are observed with STM. Position where high-speed molecules are incident on and STM area should be overlapped to observe the STM image after the sample surface are irradiated with the molecules. So, we came up with some ideas. Moreover, piezoelectric parts, which play a very important role in STM system, are easily affected by vibrational noise. However, the noise from pumps is more than we expected. So we came up with some ideas to suppress the noise.

    近年、数十eV以下の極低エネルギーイオン・原子・分子ビーム照射が固体表面反応に大きな影響を持つことがわかってきた。粒子が表面に衝突したときにその運動エネルギーが表面上の分子に移動し、表面反応が誘起されるためである。超音速分子ビーム法およびイオンビーム法を用いてエネルギー制御した数百meVから数十eVの原子・分子を表面に照射し、表面反応制御を行うことが本研究の目的である。平成14年度は平成13年度に準備を行ったエネルギー制御機器を用いてエネルギー制御した分子を固体表面に照射し、引き起こされる現象を調べた。 (1)CO/H/Ni(100)表面 水素原子を飽和量吸着させたNi(100)表面にCOを供給するとCOはNi原子の直上位地に吸着する。この表面に2eVにエネルギー制御したXe原子を照射するとCOが、直上位置からNi原子二個にまたがる橋かけ位置に移動することがわかった。エネルギー制御した原子衝突により分子の吸着位置が変化する現象を見出すことができた。 (2)NH_3/H_2O/Pt(111)表面 Pt(111)表面上に作成した単結晶氷薄膜表面にアンモニア分子を供給すると氷の最表面に水素結合を介して吸着する。この表面にエネルギー制御したXe原子を照射すると、Xe原子の運動エネルギーが2eV以上ではアンモニア分子と水分子の双方が脱離するが、1-2eVでは、表面のアンモニア分子が氷内部に拡散することがわかった。照射原子のエネルギーにより分子の脱離と内部拡散を制御できることがわかった。

    分子凝集体表面は、自然界で起こる様々な現象と深いかかわりがあり、様々な原子・分子との相互作用を理解することは広く自然現象を理解し、さらに新しい反応経路を見出すことにつながる。とくに分子凝集体表面における原子・分子のエネルギー移動の理解は、分子凝集体表面における物質合成等と直接関連しており、非常に興味深い。赤外分光法(FTIR)、昇温脱離分光(TDS)、および操作プローブ顕微鏡を用いて、分子凝集体表面におけるエネルギー移動に関する以下の成果を得た。 (1)Pt(111)表面上に水分子を4-20層程度成長させた水分子凝集体表面においてアンモニア分子は水分子凝集体表面の水素原子と水素結合を介して吸着する。加熱したときの赤外分光スペクトルの詳細な観測により、(a)アンモニア分子の一部が水分子凝集体内部を拡散してPt(111)表面に到達することを確認し、(b)水分子凝集体表面と水分子凝集体-Pt(111)界面におけるアンモニア分子のポテンシャルエネルギー差を求め、(C)水分子凝集体膜厚が増加するにつれてアンモニア分子が拡散しやすい粒界の面積が減少することを見出した。 (2)仕事関数の減少に伴って表面吸着層におけるメタン分子の直接解離反応が抑制されること、および仕事関数の増大に伴って促進されることを見いだした。これは、真空への電子の拡がりが変化したためにポテンシャル障壁が変化することを示唆するものである。さらに、このことを操作プローブ顕微鏡を用いた微視的計測により確認した。

    The reaction of gas molecules on solid surfaces is very important as it is related with catalysis and production of semiconductor devices. The objects of our research are the elucidation of the relation between the reactions on surfaces and the energy of molecules colliding the surface, and the manipulation of surface reactions with the control of the energy of molecules. We observed the effects of translational energy of gas molecules on the reactions of adsorbates. We used supersonic molecular beam apparatus to control the translational energy of gas molecules, Fourier transformed infrared spectrometer to detect the surface reaction, mass spectrometer to detect the desorbed molecules from the surface. The Ni(100) surface exposed to hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas is irradiated with energy controlled Xe atoms. When Xe energy is 0.5 eV, FTIR spectra of the CO/H/Ni(100) surface is not changed. However, when Xe energy is 1.0 eV, adsorption state of CO of the CO/H/Ni(100) changes and a part of CO molecules are desorbed from the surface. This phenomena is explained as the change of adsorption site of CO induced by Xe collision. We could control the desorption reaction which is the most elementary step in surface reactions by controlling the energy of molecules. We would like to develop the control of surface reaction by using energy controlled gas molecules, based on the present results.

    現在、固体表面でおこる化学反応(表面反応)は、触媒化学工業、半導体産業など多くの分野において中心的な役割を果たしており、応用面からも表面反応を理解することがますます重要になってきている。表面反応が起こるプロセスにおいて、まず気体分子は外部から表面に近づき、表面に衝突し、そして吸着する。この表面における衝突過程が表面反応に大きな影響を持っており、表面反応機構を原子レベルで解明するためには、衝突の効果を考慮する必要がある。研究の目的は、表面反応新機構と考えられる衝突過程の効果を明らかにすることである。 実験は、超音速分子線の技術を用いて並進・振動エネルギーを独立に制御した気体分子を試料表面に照射し、形成された表面吸着種や脱離生成物を観測する、という手順で行った。気体分子の運動エネルギーを制御するための分子線作製装置、表面吸着種の吸着状態を調べるための赤外分光装置、脱離生成物を検出するための質量分析計を用いた。 あらかじめ水素を飽和量吸着させておいたニッケル表面にさらにCOを吸着した表面を作成し、そこにキセノン原子を照射するとCOの吸着位置の変化することがわかった。キセノン原子との衝突によりCOが得たエネルギーは、COの脱離、解離、振動励起など様々なプロセスを引き起こすために消費される可能性があるが、COの拡散に利用されたと考えられる。ただし、水素が吸着した表面ではCOは吸着位置が変わらないと考えられるので、キセノン原子との衝突でCOが水素原子を取り除いた上で拡散する、という複雑なプロセスが引き起こされていることがわかった。

    Ino, one of the investigators on this project, discovered that an X-ray resonance line emitted from a metal thin film with only a layer, at the total-reflection angle, can be detected on observing the pattern of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). He named the new surface analysis method "RHEED - Total-Reflection Angle X-ray Spectroscopy (RHEED-TRAXS)". The RHEED-TRAXS is a powerful method to observe RHEED pattern and to analyze the stoichiometry of the surface simultaneously. Moreover, it is a useful method to analyze the depth profile of thin films by changing the incident angle of the electron and the extraction angle of the X-ray. The purpose of this project is to develop the RHEED-TRAXS at the soft X-ray region, i.e., "RHEED - Total-Reflection Angle Soft X-ray Spectroscopy (RHEED-TRASXS)", to show the usefulness of this method for chemical analysis of surface, and to suggest the practical use of RHEED-TRASXS. In 1999, We produced a prototype soft X-ray spectrometer in our machine shop. In this spectrometer, aberration-corrected concave grating with curved and variable spacing grooves was used to split the fluorescent X-ray lines. The splitted X-rays were detected by a multi-channel plate to change the X-ray signal into the visible light. The visible light was detected by a CCD camera out of the vacuum chamber through a viewing port. On the prototype spectrometer system, however, the signal was to weak to detect. Therefore, we planned to make an improved spectrometer to put a CCD camera into the vacuum, detecting the X-rays by the CCD camera directly. In 2000, We bought the CCD camera available to put in vacuum. We produced the modified spectrometer, using the CCD camera in vacuum, also in our machine shop. The modification brought us better S/N ratios of the spectrum. However, bremsstrahlung was overlapped with the spectrum. To conquer the bremsstrahlung will enable us to put the RHEED-TRASXS to practical use.

    本研究は、準安定励起種を超高真空下の清浄固体表面に照射し、その表面の酸化・窒化反応の過程を調べることを目的とした。 平成11年度は、熱励起したエチレン分子線をシリコン(100)表面に照射したときの炭化反応をX線光電子分光法(XPS)で観察して、分子線照射中心では黒鉛が形成されるのに対して分子線照射近傍では炭化珪素が成長している事がわかった。これは、固体表面における気体との化学反応が気体の供給濃度(フラックス)に依存することを示している。更にこの表面を反射高速電子回折法(RHEED)で詳しく分析し、結晶成長過程を調べた。これは、次世代のシリコンカーバイドを利用したデバイス素子への応用研究という点からも重要である。またダイヤモンドやアルミニウムの表面に窒素イオンビームを照射した際に形成される窒化膜についてもXPS観察を行い、更に電子顕微鏡(SEM)や原子間力顕微鏡(AFM)で表面形態を観察すると共に、電子励起発光についても研究を行った。 更に本年度は、励起種ビーム源と超高真空槽を接続するための差動排気真空槽と円筒鏡型電子エネルギー分析器を当研究所内工場で作製した。

    本研究では、固体表面における光化学反応機構の解明と新たな反応の発見を目標としている。表面反応としては触媒反応とも関係のある2分子反応を考える。2分子間で起こる光化学反応では、少なくとも一方の分子が光励起されるが、本研究では、もう一方の分子を超音速分子線の技術を用いて運動エネルギーを励起することにより、詳しく反応機構を調べ、さらに新たな反応の発見を目指した。 反応に関与する2分子の一方を光で励起し、もう一方の運動エネルギーを超音速分子線で励起するが、まず、各励起について知る必要がある。とくに後者の、運動エネルギーを励起した分子と固体表面の反応については、研究例が非常に少ない。そこで、まず、超音速分子線技術を用いて作成した分子と固体表面の吸着反応を調べた。半導体産業において重要なシリコン表面窒化反応に関連してSi(100)表面におけるNH_3分子の吸着について実験を行った。 Si(100)清浄表面にNH_3分子を照射するとNH_3分子がNH_2とHに解離して吸着する。表面が100K程度の低温の場合はSi(100)表面におけるNH_3分子の吸着確率は1.0であるが、温度が上がるにつれて吸着確率が減少することが明らかになった。表面温度が300Kでは吸着確率が0.9であるのに対し、600Kでは0.4と減少する。こういった実験結果を考察することにより、分子は表面に照射されると一旦表面近傍の準安定状態に捕捉され、その後に吸着状態に入ること、またそれら状態間のエネルギー関係などを明らかにした。 超音速分子線技術を用いて作成した分子と固体表面の反応について調べた上で、次の段階として目標とした、光励起と運動エネルギーの励起を同時に行う実験を行う予定であったが、残念ながら運動エネルギーの励起に関する実験を行うにとどまった。

    The purpose of this project is to develop an apparatus with which surface reactions and surface structures can be observed, by applying the techniques of supersonic molecular beam. With the apparatus, we want to control the surface reaction by varying the translational energy of molecules impinging on the surface, and observe the property of the reaction using the Helium beam scattering technique. The apparatus is composed of a molecular beam apparatus, a manipulator with which the position of the sample is controlled, a rotatable mass spectrometer, a vacuum chamber and a pumping system.The molecular beam apparatus is working well in point of the triply differential pumping and the control of the translational energy of molecules. As to the manipulator, by the use of stepping motors for use in UHV,the sample can be controlled with high precision which is needed for the experiment of He beam scattering. The rotatable mass spectrometer and a double differential pumping system constructed to reduce the background gas are rotated around the sample. By performing the experiments described below, we ascertained the enough performance of the apparatus. 1.We performed He diffraction experiment. We observed the diffraction pattern corresponding to LiF (100) surface structure in the angular distribution of He atoms scattered from the surface when He beam is directed to the sample. We confirmed that the surface structure is measured by the use of He beam. 2.We observed that the intensity of specular reflection of He beam from Ni (100) surface decrease with increasing the amount of the adsorbate. 3.We observed spectra of submonolayr CO and NH_3 adsorbed on Ni (100) surface.

  20. 水素結合型分子クラスターの固体表面衝突による分解反応

    本研究では、純エチレンと純アンモニアガスを用いてノズルビームを作成し、室温でのSi(100)表面に照射した。ビーム中にはこれらのガス分子のクラスターが含まれている事が質量分析計で確認できた。室温のSi表面上でエチレンおよびアンモニア分子が化学吸着することは昇温脱離法で確かめられた。また、吸着した化学状態をX線光電子分光(XPS)でも調べる事が出来た。ガスフロー法では、これらの分子は室温表面にあまり吸着しない事から、クラスターを含む分子線照射によって吸着が促進された可能性がある。エチレン分子は非解離でSi(100)表面に化学吸着することが定説であるが、本研究ではClsのXPSスペクトルから一部解離吸着している可能性もある。クラスターの持つ運動エネルギーが寄与していることが十分に考えられる。これらの点は今後、実験を継続して明らかにしてゆく予定である。 さらに、Si表面の温度を上げ、エチレンとアンモニア分子線照射による表面の炭化反応と窒化反応の研究を行った。反応の進行状態をいろいろの表面温度においてXPS法を用いて追跡した。表面温度や露出時間を変えると、ls電子の結合エネルギーにシフトがみられ、炭素や窒素原子の化学状態が異なる事が見て取れる。室温での吸着では、いずれもHが結合した分子の状態であるが、600℃以上の高温ではHは分解脱離して表面上では留まっていない。したがって、Si-CやSi-Nの状態を反映したXPSスペクトルが得られた。 この実験によって、エチレンやアンモニアなどの水素結合による分子クラスターと固体表面の相互作用を研究する端緒を開いた。

    For study of reaction mechanisms of gaseous molecule and solid surface, we have constructed a new molecular beam apparatus which is attached to a multi-surface analysis system. In the present work, carbonization and nitridation of Si surface have been investigated. For the carbonization an ethylene beam was irradiated on the clean and heated Si surfaces. After the reaction the surfaces were analyzed by low energy electron differaction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The reaction occured above 600゚C.The reaction rate increacsed with temperature up to 675゚C,but it decreased above the temperature. In an initial stage of the reaction a change of the LEED patern was observed, which means that the deposited C atoms were regularly arranged on the Si (100) surface. The reactive C and Si atoms were supplied on the growing carbide layr by the ethlene beam and the outdiffusion of Si atoms in the substrate, respectively. At the lower temperatures than 675゚C the outdiffusion of Si is the rate-determining step of the carbide layr growth. At the higher temperatures, the rate of the C supply is the rate determing step. The C supply rate may decrease with the temperatre due to the residence time the carbide layr was nearly unity at 675゚C,which suggests that the both supplies were balanced at the temperature. For the nitridation we have used a N_2^+ ion beam of energy between 100 and 1000eV.The chemical change of the surface layr during the beam irradiation was studied by XPS.At the lower energies of 100-200eV a very thin film of a nearly stoichimetric compound Si_3N_4 was formed, but at the higher energies the nitride layrs contained many defects. The defects were partially dimished by annealing.
