A microwave-driven in-tube accelerator (MITA) concept is proposed to improve the thrust performance of microwave rockets driven by repeated intense microwave beam irradiation. A two-dimensional axisymmetric simulation model with a coupling module of electromagnetic wave propagation, plasma reaction diffusion, and neutral gas dynamics was developed, which captured the formation of the beam-induced plasma and shock wave on the MITA. The momentum coupling coefficient of the MITA increases with the beam frequency because a quality of beam focusing is improved, and the energy absorption at the plasma front is enhanced owing to an increase in the electric field intensity around the focal point. However, an increase in the thrust performance saturates when the plasma front, which propagates from the focal point, protrudes into the front side of the vehicle. Therefore, a design parameter, such as the vehicle radius, pulse width, beam intensity, and beam frequency, should be optimized to avoid gas heating at the vehicle front.

Abstract The microwave-driven in-tube accelerator (MITA) concept, which installs the center body of the thruster inside the waveguide and generates thrust via millimeter-wave beam irradiation from the front side of the center body, was experimentally demonstrated using 210-kW and 28-GHz gyrotron device. For the 28-GHz beams, a vortex phase plate was newly designed to change the incident beam profile from a Gaussian to a donut-shaped pattern, which was installed in front of the thruster’s center body. Without the vortex phase plate, gas breakdown occurred at the center-body head, providing a negative impulse. However, as the electric field concentration at the center-body head was avoided using the vortex phase plate, plasma and strong shock wave generation were obtained at the rear side of the vehicle, inducing a positive impulse to accelerate the thruster toward the beam source direction. The MITA thrust performance increased as the incident beam pulse width increased because gas heating was enhanced at the rear side of the center body.

The relationships between the ionization front propagation and standing-wave intensity of a millimeter-wave were experimentally investigated using a 28 GHz gyrotron in a millimeter-wave discharge plasma under subcritical conditions. The time variation of the standing-wave intensity measured by a fixed rectenna was slower when the ionization front propagated continuously, whereas it varied rapidly with a spectrum containing high-frequency components when the ionization front propagated intermittently. High-speed camera observations revealed that the waveform variation was synchronized with the timing of streamer elongation. This small-scale observation method can be applied to monitor millimeter-wave discharge plasma in a beamed energy propulsion rocket.

Abstract Tractor millimeter-wave beam propulsion (TMiP), which obtains a propulsive force by receiving a high-power tractor beam from the front side of the vehicle, was proposed for space missions such as rocket launches from Earth and planetary takeoff missions. A beam irradiation experiment with a gyrotron device was conducted for a model rocket with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) lens to collect the tractor beam power, facilitating gas breakdown and plasma generation at the focal point. A high-pressure gas was formed via plasma heating, interacting with the PTFE lens mounted on the front of the vehicle and generating a propulsive force for rocket launching. A parametric study was conducted by changing the pulse width, which showed that the maximum thrust performance was achieved when the plasma front propagating toward the beam source did not protrude from the air-breathing intake at the front of the vehicle. Additionally, computational simulations for electromagnetic wave propagation and compressible fluid dynamics indicated that the thrust performance could be improved by decreasing the rocket diameter due to shock wave concentration.

Abstract A free-flight experiment involving a multi-parabola laser propulsion vehicle was conducted using repetitive laser pulses at a repetition frequency of 50 Hz and an energy of 4.93 J per pulse. Observations made with a camera indicated that the vehicle achieved a maximum altitude of 110 mm; however, it deviated from the laser beam line due to initial misalignment of the laser setup. To improve flight stability, we developed a tracking system to monitor the vehicle’s motion and control the laser irradiation position. Performance requirements were assessed based on the free-flight experiment data, revealing that the vehicle attained a maximum translational speed of 0.08 m/s before deviation occurred. Our tracking system was evaluated to have a trackable speed of 0.09 m/s, meeting the performance requirements for free flight and capable of stabilizing the repetitive pulse flight of a laser propulsion vehicle.

A standing wave induced in front of the ionization-front of a millimeter-wave discharge was numerically investigated to develop an interferometric discharge structure identification method. The time-varying waveform of the standing-wave intensity obtained at a distant observation point was smooth when a continuous comb-shaped structure was formed, whereas it was noisy with high-frequency components when a discrete structure was formed. The peak frequency of the Fourier spectrum of the time-varying waveform was proportional to the ionization-front propagation speed. The rapid time-variation of the waveform was caused by an increase in millimeter-wave absorption in a new plasma spot formation in the discrete structure. The results suggest that discharge structure identification, measurement of ionization-front propagation, and timing of plasma spot formation can be conducted experimentally without using a high-speed camera.

Plasma-front propagation processes of 170 GHz millimeter-wave discharge were investigated under subcritical incident electric field intensity by using a one-dimensional model. The discharge structure was numerically reproduced at more than 0.2 MV/m by introducing the detailed chemical reaction and radiation transport processes into the conventional model. The results revealed that the propagation mechanism of the plasma front in the millimeter-wave discharge changes depending on the incident electric field intensity. At intensities greater than 1.4 MV/m, the plasma front propagated at supersonic speed, while forming a discrete structure, which has intervals of 1/4 wavelength of the millimeter wave. This structure was generated by electron-impact ionization and photoionization processes. At the intermediate intensities, the plasma front propagated continuously rather than discretely because the gas expansion increased the reduced electric field and induced electron-impact ionization. The dominant heating process at the plasma front was fast gas heating. At intensities less than 0.3 MV/m, the plasma front propagated continuously, but the dominant heating process changed to vibrational–translational relaxation. The discharge was maintained by thermal ionization and associative ionization. The simulation results were in good agreement with the past millimeter discharge experiments at this intensity.

Abstract An improved model was proposed to reduce a computational cost for subcritical millimeter-wave discharge. The proposed model was able to reproduce the plasma-front propagation via radiation transport as similar to the conventional model, and the plasma-front propagation speed was in agreement with the previous simulation. An electron transport effect by neutral fluid advection, which has been introduced into the conventional model, does not affect the propagation speed. By using the presented model, a computational time was reduced by 35%, which was suitable for a multi-dimensional simulation in the future.

Abstract A two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric fluid modeling for plasma dynamics was coupled with an electromagnetic wave propagation to capture the electromagnetic wave and plasma structures on the microwave-driven in-tube accelerator (MITA) concept. The electromagnetic wave injected into a waveguide was focused on at the vehicle’s rear side through reflection processes by the front mirror and the waveguide. An overcritical plasma was created at the high-intensity electric field region because of enhancement of an electron-impact ionization. The incident microwave was reflected by the plasma with overcritical density and a standing wave was induced in front of the dense plasma because the reflected wave overlapped with the incident microwave. In addition to wave enhancement by standing process, the strong electric field region was obtained at edges of the overcritical plasma because of wave diffraction, which can affect a shock wave strength and thrust performance of the MITA.

A particle model of plasma was coupled with electromagnetic wave propagation to reproduce a filamentary structure and diffusive pattern in a microwave breakdown. The thrust performance of a microwave rocket was estimated by combining discharge calculation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An external magnetic field is applied to the discharge volume to improve thrust performance for low ambient pressure by combination of magnetic confinement and resonance heating technique. The magnetic field suppresses the propagation speed of the ionization front because the electron cannot cross the magnetic field at lower pressure, whereas propagation speed increases with decreased ambient pressure when no magnetic field is applied. The energy absorption rate increases when electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) occurs with the corresponding magnetic field, which improves the thrust performance of the microwave rocket.

To present a feasibility of high-altitude flight of a laser-propelled vehicle at supersonic speed, we have developed a flight simulator which has fluid-orbit coupling calculation module to reproduce impulsive flight reaction driven by blast waves. By high-power energy transmission through arrayed lasers together with the genetic algorithm (GA) controlled sub-laser, the supersonic flight is successfully achieved in the simulation for 32.5-g vehicle, while the angular offset should be suppressed as small as possible. Rather than translational position, controlling angular offsets by the GA operation is especially important to attain the km-order flight on the premise of the active control. Additionally, the vehicle weight, the vehicle size, and the input energy are scaled up to assess the stable flight of 10-kg vehicle. The active control technique has enough possibility to launch kg-order vehicle at supersonic regime with the optimized beaming strategy.

Modeling of minute plasma formation is of great importance around electrodes of a plasma actuator(PA) utilizing dielectric barrier discharge(DBD)with a relatively low computational cost. Although electrons need some distance to acquire sufficient energy causing impact ionization, such a transient phenomenon cannot be described in a conventional fluid model because of local field approximation. In order to simulate appropriate discharge process in the DBD-PA, a hybrid code coupling with a particle model was constructed, which treats high-density region as the fluid model but high electric field region as the particle model. The hybrid simulation reproduced spreading of the high-density region from the exposed electrode for the positively biased case as well as the full-particle simulation.

A flight performance of an aerospace vehicle can be improved using a remote energy transfer because beam-induced shock wave and plasma changes a flow field around the vehicle. A numerical simulation was conducted to understand a discharge physics, which implied that a radiation transfer and a thermal ionization process played an important role on the plasma-front propagation. Moreover, the beam irradiation and discharge experiments indicated that a lift performance of the aerospace vehicle can be improved.
