Cyclostationary linear inverse models (CS-LIMs) are advanced data-driven techniques for extracting first-order time-dependent dynamics and random forcing information from cyclostationary observational data. This study focuses on the mathematical perspective of CS-LIMs and presents two variants, namely, -CS-LIM and -CS-LIM. The -CS-LIM, improved from the original CS-LIM, constructs the first-order dynamics through the interval-wise application of the stationary LIM (ST-LIM), capturing the integrated effect of each interval where similar cyclostationary dependencies are present. This approach provides robustness against noise but is affected by the Nyquist issue, similar to the ST-LIM. The -CS-LIM, on the other hand, estimates the time-dependent Jacobian of the underlying system. Although more sensitive to noise, this method is free from the Nyquist issue. Numerical experiments demonstrate that both CS-LIM variants effectively capture the temporal structure of the underlying system using synthetic observational data. Moreover, when applied to real-world ENSO data, CS-LIMs yield consistent results that align well with the observations and current El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) understanding.

In real-world problems, environmental noise is often idealized as Gaussian white noise, despite potential temporal dependencies. The linear inverse model (LIM) is a class of data-driven methods that extract dynamic and stochastic information from finite time-series data of complex systems. In this study, we introduce a new variant of LIM, called colored LIM, which models stochasticity using Ornstein-Uhlenbeck colored noise. Despite the nontrivial correlation between observable and colored noise, we show that colored LIM unveils the desired information merely from the correlation function of the observable. Therefore, this approach not only accounts for the memory effects of environmental noise, traditionally represented by time-uncorrelated white noise in the classical-LIM framework, but does so using the same observational dataset without requiring additional data. Furthermore, we show that colored LIM does not reduce to classical LIM in the white noise limit, underscoring the importance of temporal dependencies in stochastic systems. In this paper, we rigorously develop the colored LIM, explore its connections with the classical LIM, dynamic mode decomposition, and vector autoregressive moving average models, and validate its effectiveness on both ideal linear and nonlinear systems. In addition, we illustrate the potential applications and implications of colored LIM for real-world problems, including the El Niño–southern oscillation and the electricity network of Tohoku University. It is known that time delays generally make a system unstable. However, it is numerically observed that the diffusion coefficients of the Wiener processes with time-delayed feedback decrease while increasing the time delay τ. In particular, the decay of the diffusion coefficients with the form (11+τ)2 has been confirmed by numerical simulations [Ando et al., Phys. Rev. E 96, 012148 (2017)]. In this paper, we present two analytical derivations for the relation (11+τ)2 by dynamical system approaches using the Laplace transform and stochastic differential equations.

Natural phenomena generate complex dynamics because of nonlinear interactions among their components. The dynamics can be exploited as a kind of computational resource. For example, in the framework of natural computation, various natural phenomena such as quantum mechanics and cellular dynamics are used to realize general purpose calculations or logical operations. In recent years, simple collection of such nature dynamics has become possible in a sensor-rich society. For example, images of plant movement that have been captured indirectly by a surveillance camera can be regarded as sensor outputs reflecting the state of the wind striking the plant. Herein, based on ideas of physical reservoir computing, we present a methodology for wind speed and direction estimation from naturally occurring sensors in movies. Then we demonstrate its effectiveness through experimentation. Specifically using the proposed methodology, we investigate the computational capability of the nature dynamics, revealing its high robustness and generalization performance for computation.

The bursting activity of pancreatic β cells is correlated with insulin secretion. Although normal pancreatic β cells show periodic bursting, the bursting activity becomes irregular in dysfunctional pancreatic β cells of type 2 diabetic patients. In this study, we modeled the dynamics of dysfunctional pancreatic β cells using differential equations. We investigated it in terms of energy efficiency of control. The control method is considered for on-demand electrical stimulation using the methodology of chaos control. Numerical simulation results show that the bursts are controlled in a periodic rhythm by the feedback mechanism. In addition, we found input timings that induce energy efficient control for rhythmic bursts. These results suggest that chaos control can improve insulin secretion, which might contribute to type 2 diabetes treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The Delta-Notch signaling pathway induces fine-grained patterns of differentiation from initially homogeneous progenitor cells in many biological contexts, including Drosophila bristle formation, where mathematical modeling reportedly suggests the importance of production rate of the components of this signaling pathway. In contrast, the epithelial differentiation of bile ducts in the developing liver is unique in that it occurs around the portal vein cells, which express extremely high amounts of Delta ligands and act as a disturbance for the amount of Delta ligands in the field by affecting the expression levels of downstream target genes in the cells nearby. In the present study, we mathematically examined the dynamics of the Delta-Notch signaling pathway components in disturbance-driven biliary differentiation, using the model for fine-grained patterns of differentiation. RESULTS: A portal vein cell induced a high Notch signal in its neighboring cells, which corresponded to epithelial differentiation, depending on the production rates of Delta ligands and Notch receptors. In addition, this epithelial differentiation tended to occur in conditions where fine-grained patterning was reported to be lacking. These results highlighted the potential importance of the stability towards homogeneity determined by the production rates in Delta ligands and Notch receptors, in a disturbance-dependent epithelial differentiation.

Reservoir computing derived from recurrent neural networks is more applicable to real world systems than deep learning because of its low computational cost and potential for physical implementation. Specifically, physical reservoir computing, which replaces the dynamics of reservoir units with physical phenomena, has recently received considerable attention. In this study, we propose a method of exploiting the dynamics of road traffic as a reservoir, and numerically confirm its feasibility by applying several prediction tasks based on a simple mathematical model of the traffic flow.

Power packets are proposed as a transmission unit that can deliver power and information simultaneously. They are transferred using the store-and-forward method of power routers. A system that achieves power supply/demand in this manner is called a power packet network (PPN). A PPN is expected to enhance structural robustness and operational reliability in an energy storage system (ESS) with recent diverse distributed sources. However, this technology is still in its early stage and faces numerous challenges, such as high cost of implementation and complicated energy management. In this paper, we propose a novel power control based on decentralized algorithms for a PPN. Specifically, the power supply is triggered and managed by communications between power routers. We also discuss the mechanism of the decentralized algorithm for the operation of power packets and reveal the feasibility of the given control method and application by forming biased power flows on the consensus-based distribution.

A power packet distribution network is expected to be one of the advanced power distribution systems, providing high controllability in both energy management and failure management. Regarding network operations, the power packet transmission is governed by switching operation within each of the routers. Here, the power distribution through power packets exhibits consensus-like dynamical behaviors. These features lead to the question of a consensus dynamics on switching topology and routing controls for appropriate power flows. Our approach to the above subjects is based on the dynamical modeling and the emulation of dynamics through the decentralized control of routers. The simulations on a ring-structure network, of the power distribution, reveal that the dynamical solution of the unbiased distribution is feasible via the decentralized control, while in the biased case, the result shows two behavioral fragments, which is quite different from the dynamical solution. In this discussion, we propose a decentralized algorithm that contains only fundamental functions for the packet transmission and is able to be redesigned or extended for further applications.

Time delay in general leads to instability in some systems, while specific feedback with delay can control fluctuated motion in nonlinear deterministic systems to a stable state. In this paper, we consider a stochastic process, i.e., a random walk, and observe its diffusion phenomenon with time-delayed feedback. As a result, the diffusion coefficient decreases with increasing delay time. We analytically illustrate this suppression of diffusion by using stochastic delay differential equations and justify the feasibility of this suppression by applying time-delayed feedback to a molecular dynamics model.

Pancreatic β-cells exhibit bursting electrical activity, which is correlated with insulin secretion. It has been reported that several ionic channels may contribute to the characteristic electrical activities of these cells but their mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we examined how the characteristic electrical activity of isolated β-cells occurs. Using a simple mathematical model of pancreatic β-cells, we found that conductances of the voltage-sensitive mixed ion channel and voltage-sensitive potassium channel contribute to such electrical activity. In addition, we found that noise can play a key role in this activity. These results imply that the bursting electrical activity of pancreatic β-cells can be controlled by ionic conductances or noise. Such control enables medical application of β-cells in type II diabetes, wherein insulin secretion is difficult to control. Our findings may contribute to a novel treatment for type II diabetes.

A mobile oscillator network, which is a kind of temporal networks, is of interest due to a variety of its applications such as mobile communication. In this study, we investigate the time required for synchronization of all the nodes in a mobile oscillator network, especially regarding effects of fixed nodes on the synchronization time. According to our simulation, there exists an optimal ratio of the number of fixed nodes to that of mobile ones in order to reduce the synchronization time. Furthermore, we analytically estimate the synchronization time with respect to the number of fixed nodes.

<p>Time-delayed feedback method is known as control method for chaotic dynamics. We apply the feedback method to a stochastic system, especially a random walk model, and demonstrate numerical simulations. As a result, it is observed that the diffusion due to the stochastic term in the model can be controlled by the time-delayed feedback. Additionally, we analyze the system theoretically by using stochastic delay differential equations and transfer functions.</p>

We show how a synthetic gene network can operate, in an adequate range of noise, as a logic gate. Interestingly, noise enhances the reliability of the logic function. In this paper, we consider a two-dimensional model of a genetic toggle switch, where we show how two complementary gate operations can be achieved in simultaneously. This result indicates the parallel processing ability of this biological system.

In general, a network system is described by the combination of (i) network structure and (ii) component dynamics. For the analysis and design of a networked system, it is usually assumed that the information on both the network structure and the component dynamics is available. It is however often violated in real situations, especially with heterogeneous components. Therefore, it is desirable to establish a framework of the structural analysis and design, i.e., analysis and design in the case where the network structure is known but the component dynamics is (almost) unknown. This study has established a series of results on the structural issues.

Our study has investigated algorithms from two points of view of network structure and time base. Both theory on network flow problems and practical algorithms for network optimization on the basis of real world problems were developed. In addition, modeling and solving methods for online scheduling were discussed from the time base approach. As link together big data analysis and our network research, we confirmed efficiency of a method using network structure for the parts not identifying by data analysis, a method performing iteratively machine learning for imbalanced data, and a method solving iteratively optimization problems for finding flexible solutions.

In this research project, in order to develop a new remedy for type 2 diabetes, we propose a model of electric stimulation to pancreas. In particular, we investigate a mathematical model of a pancreatic beta cell which is related to insulin secretion for controlling blood glucose level. We obtained the following two results. 1) We observed a phenomenon promoting insulin secretion by simulating a reaction of beta cells to white Gaussian noise, that is, the frequency of bursting of the beta cell increases with increasing the amplitude of noise. 2) We proposed a model of the background current of the beta cell and reproduced behavior of the beta cell by simulation consistent with the experiment of the background current.

In this research, we have proposed a novel computational architecture exploiting noise-induced phenomena in the concept of harnessing noise in real world systems. In particular, we focused on two systems. One is the calculation system driven by fluctuations called Brownian circuits, which achieve computational universality. We have developed the theory of the Brownian circuits to work under deterministic noise, namely chaotic fluctuations, using chaotic synchronization. The other is a stochastic resonance theory for logical operations. We have applied this theory to higher dimensional systems such as a genetic network model and proposed a new method how to parallelize logic gates in such systems.
