An in-depth understanding of flow through fractured media is vital to optimise engineering applications, including geothermal energy production, enhanced oil recovery, CO2 storage, and nuclear waste disposal. Advances in 3D-printing technologies have made it possible to generate 3D printed fracture networks with different fracture characteristics. By performing fluid flow experiments in the 3D-printed fractured networks, the impact of the fracture parameters, such as the density, orientation, aperture, dip, and azimuth, on the overall flow can be investigated. This data article contains a detailed description of the framework followed to design fractured networks with different fracture parameters and to create 3D-printed samples, including fracture networks. Furthermore, it contains the experimental protocols used to measure the porosity, permeability, and tracer responses of the 3D-printed samples. The generated datasets provided include geometry data describing the fracture networks, as well as porosity, permeability and tracer response data obtained from flow experiments conducted in the fracture networks.

Numerical modeling for geothermal reservoir engineering is a crucial process to evaluate the performance of the reservoir and to develop strategies for the future development. The governing equations in the geothermal reservoir models consist of several constitutive parameters, and each parameter is given to a large number of simulation grids. Thus, the combinations of parameters we need to estimate are almost limitless. Although several inverse analysis algorithms have been developed, determining the constitutive parameters in the reservoir model is still a matter of trial-and-error estimation in actual practice, and is largely based on the experience of the analyst. There are several parameters which control the hydrothermal processes in the geothermal reservoir modeling. In this study, as an initial challenge, we focus on permeability, which is one of the most important parameters for the modeling. We propose a machine-learning-based method to estimate permeability distributions using measurable data. A large number of learning data were prepared by a geothermal reservoir simulator capable of calculating pressure and temperature distributions in the natural state with different permeability distributions. Several machine learning algorithms (i.e., linear regression, ridge regression, Lasso regression, support vector regression (SVR), multilayer perceptron (MLP), random forest, gradient boosting, and the k-nearest neighbor algorithm) were applied to learn the relationship between the permeability and the pressure and temperature distributions. By comparing the feature importance and the scores of estimations, random forest using pressure differences as feature variables provided the best estimation (the training score of 0.979 and the test score of 0.789). Since it was learned independently of the grids and locations, this model is expected to be generalized. It was also found that estimation is possible to some extent, even for different heat source conditions. This study is a successful demonstration of the first step in achieving the goal of new data-driven geothermal reservoir engineering, which will be developed and enhanced with the knowledge of information science.

<title>Abstract</title>Topological data analysis is an emerging concept of data analysis for characterizing shapes. A state-of-the-art tool in topological data analysis is persistent homology, which is expected to summarize quantified topological and geometric features. Although persistent homology is useful for revealing the topological and geometric information, it is difficult to interpret the parameters of persistent homology themselves and difficult to directly relate the parameters to physical properties. In this study, we focus on connectivity and apertures of flow channels detected from persistent homology analysis. We propose a method to estimate permeability in fracture networks from parameters of persistent homology. Synthetic 3D fracture network patterns and their direct flow simulations are used for the validation. The results suggest that the persistent homology can estimate fluid flow in fracture network based on the image data. This method can easily derive the flow phenomena based on the information of the structure.

Hydraulic fracturing using water-based fluid consumes a large amount of freshwater resources and pollutes a reservoir by substantially decreasing its matrix permeability. To address the problems caused by water-based fracturing fluids, the possibility of using SC-CO as a fracturing fluid was studied for its special properties (such as low viscosity, high density, and miscibility with hydrocarbons). Previous experimental studies have indicated that SC-CO is superior to water-based fracturing fluid in inducing complex fractures at the laboratory scale, while the mechanism of complex fractures induced by SC-CO remains unclear. This study develops a new numerical model to simulate the different performances of SC-CO fracturing and water-based fluid fracturing to determine the mechanisms of complex fractures. The numerical model couples an unsteady flow model based on the pore-scale network method and a solid model using the finite element method with cohesive zone elements. The unsteady flow model reproduces a two-phase flow considering viscous and capillary forces at the pore scale. Our simulation results show that both viscous and capillary forces contribute to the different fracturing performances between SC-CO and water-based fluid. The capillary force should be considered in the flow model when simulating fracturing in low matrix permeability rock. 2 2 2 2 2

Nano- and microparticles are expected to have several functionalities, and the ability to control size and shape is an advantage of using nano-/microparticles. This study investigated a possibility that the sizes of nano-/microparticle can be used to extract new information on structures in a fractured medium. Flow experiments were conducted to observe the particle transport in a micromodel on which a single fracture and rock matrix (grain and pore space) was fabricated on a silicon wafer. Water and nano-/microparticles were injected into the micromodel, and the droplets were collected at the outlet. Tunable Resistive Pulse Sensing (TRPS) was used to measure the frequency distributions of particle diameters from each droplet at each time. The result shows that the larger particles were observed only at early time, while the smaller particles were detected at early time and also at late time. This indicates that the larger particles flow in a fracture quickly, while smaller particles migrate through both fracture and matrix over a wider range of time. Particles with different sizes transport through fractured media differently depending on the fracture structures. The tracer response of nano- and microparticles may be useful to evaluate the fracture structures and the flow properties for different flow pathways.

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) fracturing is a promising technology for unconventional energy development and carbon capture and storage. Experimental studies have shown that SC-CO2 fracturing can form complex fracture networks and reduce crack initiation pressure, which are different results from those when fracturing with aqueous fluids. The complex fracture networks that form from SC-CO2 fracturing may be the result of strong seepage effects (i.e., low capillary and viscous forces). To understand the different injection behaviors induced by SC-CO2 and aqueous fluids in low-permeability rocks, this study develops a new two-phase steady-state model based on the pore-scale network method. Although other models consider the viscous force, our model implements the capillary and viscous forces to reproduce the seepage effect. Because of the capillary force, the flow model is nonlinear and solved by iteratively solving matrix equations until a conservation of volumetric flux is satisfied. Simulation results show that the capillary force in a two-phase flow system in small pore spaces has consequential effects on its pressure distribution. Such factors lead to discontinuous pressure drops. This study shows that the seepage effect of SC-CO2 is stronger than that of aqueous fluids and can largely avoid the capillary blockage that arises in oil-water systems.

Reinjection is crucial for sustainable geothermal developments. In order to predict thermal performances due to cold-water injection, a method was developed to estimate effective fracture surface areas (i.e., heat transfer areas). Tracer response curves at production wells are analyzed to determine flow rates and pore volumes, and the fracture surface areas are optimized by short-term thermal response curves. Because the method erases fracture apertures from the equation by combining mass and heat transfer equations, the fracture surfaces can be analyzed without assuming that the fracture shape is a parallel plate. The estimation method was applied to two geothermal field datasets: One involved an artificially created reservoir, and the other involved a naturally occurring reservoir. The estimated heat transfer areas are reasonable in the field geometries. Once the fracture surface area is estimated, the future temperature change and power generation can be predicted. This can provide a simple and quick method to design reinjection strategies.

Copyright 2019 ARMA, American Rock Mechanics Association. Compared to conventional reservoirs, shale gas and oil reservoirs have super-low matrix permeability. Hydraulic fracturing is an effective technology to develop shale gas and oil resources. Water has been used as fracturing fluid, which is immiscible with formation fluid (i.e., oil and gas). When immiscible multiphase flow occurs in shale rock, the capillary force has large effect. Conventional fracturing simulation models for shale gas reservoirs assume that flow field is dominated only by viscous force. This assumption is unreasonable for low permeable rock because seepage effects influenced by both capillary force and viscous force. This study develops a new numerical model to simulate multiphase flow in low permeable rocks and to investigate the effects of capillary force on fracturing performance. The numerical model couples flow model and solid model. The flow model consists two parts: matrix flow model and fracture flow model. The matrix flow model based on Pore-scale Network Method (PNM) reproduced two-phase flow in matrix considering viscous forces and capillary forces. The fracture flow model based on unsteady flow model simulated unsteady flow in opened fractures. The solid model uses the Finite Element Method (FEM) with cohesive zone element. The validation was carried by comparison with analytical solution and experiment results. Then, fracturing performance of different capillary force were analyzed. The simulation results show that capillary force has significant impact on fracture geometry.

Deep geological repositories for nuclear wastes consist of both engineered and natural geologic barriers to isolate the radioactive material from the human environment. Inappropriate repositories of nuclear waste would cause severe contamination to nearby aquifers. In this complex environment, mass transport of radioactive contaminants displays anomalous behaviors and often produces power-law tails in breakthrough curves due to spatial heterogeneities in fractured rocks, velocity dispersion, adsorption, and decay of contaminants, which requires more sophisticated models beyond the typical advection-dispersion equation. In this paper, accounting for the mass exchange between a fracture and a porous matrix of complex geometry, the universal equation of mass transport within a fracture is derived. This equation represents the generalization of the previously used models and accounts for anomalous mass exchange between a fracture and porous blocks through the introduction of the integral term of convolution type and fractional derivatives. This equation can be applied for the variety of processes taking place in the complex fractured porous medium, including the transport of radioactive elements. The Laplace transform method was used to obtain the solution of the fractional diffusion equation with a time-dependent source of radioactive contaminant.

Understanding flow mechanisms in fractured media is essential for geoscientific research and geological development industries. This study used 3-D printed fracture networks in order to control the properties of fracture distributions inside the sample. The accuracy and appropriateness of creating samples by the 3-D printer was investigated by using a X-ray CT scanner. The CT scan images suggest that the 3-D printer is able to reproduce complex three-dimensional spatial distributions of fracture networks. Use of hexane after printing was found to be an effective way to remove wax for the posttreatment. Local permeability was obtained by the cubic law and used to calculate the global mean. The experimental value of the permeability was between the arithmetic and geometric means of the numerical results, which is consistent with conventional studies. This methodology based on 3-D printed fracture networks can help validate existing flow modeling and numerical methods.

A key uncertainty in the design and long-time behavior of EGS reservoirs, and their management, is the fracture surface area that controls the rate of heat transfer between the host rock and the circulating injected water. A workflow is developed that uses analytic solutions to estimate this surface area. We first analyze a tracer test to estimate the fracture pore volume swept, the flow geometry, and the presence of multiple fractures (or damage zones around the primary fracture). Using this information about fracture properties, an analytic solution describing produced temperature vs. time can be solving iteratively to estimate surface area. In the case of multiple fractures, we show that the equation governing the produced fluids' temperature is superposed to estimate the surface area. The workflow is shown to be robust, even in the presence of heterogeneity. The workflow is then used to make design decisions and predictions about the sustainably of a reservoir. Also shown is the use of the workflow to estimate power generation as a function of fracture properties (measured) and flow rates (controlled), and show how to scale up to multiple production wells and fracture packs. Assumptions used, and limitations of the method are discussed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cancellous bone contains bone marrow where hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are produced. Those cells represent an interest in the treatment of leukemia during which transplantation of bone marrow is performed to replace patient degraded cells. HSCs are usually harvested by a puncture in the cancellous bone of the donor's ilium using a needle. However, this procedure can cause severe burden to the donor because of its high invasiveness. The flow of bone marrow is strongly related to the harvesting of HSCs and permeability is one of the major parameters to characterize cancellous bone. Previous researches have already shown an anisotropy of permeability in femur, whereas punctures are usually performed in the iliac cancellous bone. The objective of this paper is to characterize the anisotropic permeability of iliac cancellous bone. Digital images of a porcine iliac cancellous bone sample were obtained by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and three locations were selected to fabricate bone models, reproduced by 3D printing at three times magnification. To compare the structure of manufactured models, porosity and its variations along X, Y and Z direction were evaluated from micro-CT images. To measure permeability, a specific perfusion system was developed. The pressure drop between the upstream and the downstream of bone models were measured at different flow rates, reaching a Reynolds number of 27-158, appropriate for the aspiration condition. Darcy-Forchheimer's law was then applied to calculate the permeability and Forchheimer coefficient of bone models. Results revealed different porosities and resultant permeabilities for each bone nodels. A positive correlation links those two parameters. Different fluctuations of porosity were evaluated along each direction although no significant difference of average porosity was observed. On the other hand, different permeabilities and Forchheimer coefficients were measured in each direction with various degrees of anisotropy. Permeabilities in three orthogonal directions of the model ranged from 1.96×10-10 to 4.29×10-10 m2. Results indicate that transport properties in cancellous bone depend on the flow directions. The anisotropy of permeability can be used for evaluation of flow in cancellous bone.

Fracture matrix interactions strongly affect anomalous heat transfer in geological sites. This study investigates effects of the interactions between fractures and rock matrix by using the method of multiple interacting continua (MINC). The MINC generates different temperature histories for varied fracture spacings. Two analytical solutions of each porous model and fracture model are used to fit the numerical results for temperature histories due to cold-water injection. The porous model is good agreement with the result for small fracture spacing, while a solution of the fracture model fits the result for large fracture spacing. The MINC yields intermediate behaviors in between a porous medium and a single fracture. A fractional heat transfer equation (fHTE) has been developed to describe anomalous thermal diffusion in a fractured reservoir. The fHTE accounts for heat flux from fracture into matrix by using a temporal fractional derivative. The fHTE can capture numerical results for temperature histories with different fracture spacings. The fracture spacing has correlations to the fHTE best-fit parameters (i.e., the orders of fractional derivatives and the retardation parameters). The fHTE with varying time fractional derivatives can cover descriptions of subdiffusion, Fickian diffusion, and superdiffusion. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fault zones affect the flow paths of fluids in groundwater aquifers and geological reservoirs. Fault-related fracture damage decreases to background levels with increasing distance from the fault core according to a power law. This study investigated mass transport in such a fault-related structure using nonlocal models. A column flow experiment is conducted to create a permeability distribution that varies with distance from a main conduit. The experimental tracer response curve is preasymptotic and implies subdiffusive transport, which is slower than the normal Fickian diffusion. If the surrounding area is a finite domain, an upper truncated behavior in tracer response (i.e., exponential decline at late times) is observed. The tempered anomalous diffusion (TAD) model captures the transition from subdiffusive to Fickian transport, which is characterized by a smooth transition from power-law to an exponential decline in the late-time breakthrough curves.

This study provides a method to evaluate the effects of cold-water injection into an advection-dominated geothermal reservoir. A fractional advection-dispersion equation (fADE) and a fractional heat transfer equation (fHTE) are applied to fault-related structures in geothermal areas where the fracture density is described by a power-law model. Synthetic production data generated by a numerical reservoir simulator reveal that the fADE and the fHTE are in reasonable agreement with the tracer responses and temperature change in a fault zone. Tracer analysis based on the fADE has potential to elucidate fault-related structures and to predict premature thermal breakthroughs quickly and efficiently. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The fractional advection-dispersion equation (fADE) has been proposed to describe mass transport in a fractured reservoir. This study develops a finite discrete method to solve the fADE and tests its accuracy against analytical solutions. Tracer simulation uses a three-dimensional simulation of flow analysis (FRACSIM-3D). The solution to the fADE incorporating a spatial fractional derivative shows reasonable agreement with the tracer response from FRACSIM-3D, which shows highly anomalous behaviors such as a long tail. The prediction by the fADE model is reasonably similar to those of FRACSIM-3D irrespective of differing well intervals. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This research proposes a numerical scheme for evaluating the effect of cold-water injection into a geothermal reservoir. A fractional heat transfer equation (fHTE) is derived based on the fractional advection-dispersion equation (fADE) that describes non-Fickian dispersion in a fractured reservoir. Numerical simulations are conducted to examine the applicability of the fADE and the fHTE in interpreting tracer and thermal responses in a fault-related subsidiary structure associated with fractal geometry. A double-peak is exhibited when the surrounding rocks have a constant permeability. On the other hand, the peak in the tracer response gradually decreases when the permeability varies with distance from the fault zone according to a power law, which can be described by the fADE. The temperature decline is more gradual when the permeability of surrounding rocks varies spatially than when they have a constant permeability. The fHTE demonstrates good agreement with the temperature profiles for the different permeabilities of surrounding rocks. The retardation parameters in the fADE and the fHTE increase with the permeability of the surrounding rocks. The orders of the temporal fractional derivatives in the fADE and the fHTE vary with the permeability patterns.

Use of fractional Advection-Dispersion Equation (fADE) has been proposed to describe mass transport in a fractured reservoir. In this study, a finite discrete method to solve the fADE is developed and its accuracy is tested against analytical solutions.<br>Tracer simulation is carried out using a 3D simulation code for flow analysis (FRACSIM-3D). The fADE mathematical model is applied to fit the numerical tracer results, which show highly anomalous behaviors such as a long tail. The solution to the fADE including a spatial fractional derivative is shown to be in reasonable agreement with the tracer response produced by FRACSIM-3D. The fitting parameters of the fADE equation obtained for well interval of 50 m are used to make predictions of tracer responses for well intervals of 100 m - 500 m. It has been shown that the tracer responses predicted by the fADE model are reasonable close to those obtained by FRACSIM-3D irrespective of the different well intervals. This study demonstrates that the fADE offers a method for predicting tracer responses in a fractured reservoir.
