X-ray grating interferometry, which has been spotlighted in the last decade as a multi-modal X-ray imaging technique, can provide three independent images, i.e., absorption, di erential-phase, and visibility-contrast images. We report on a cause of the visibility contrast, an e ect of insu cient temporal coherence, that can be observed when continuous-spectrum X-rays are used. This e ect occurs even for a sample without unresolvable random structures, which are known as the main causes of visibility contrast. We performed an experiment using an acrylic cylinder and quantitatively explained the visibility contrast due to this e ect.

We report on millisecond-order X-ray tomography with grating-based X-ray imaging using a white synchrotron X-ray beam. We performed a compressed sensing technique for tomographic reconstruction and successfully obtained a phase tomogram for a polypropylene sphere with a temporal resolution of 2.0 ms. Our approach will make it possible to realize millisecond-order four-dimensional X-ray tomography but also to markedly reduce the radiation damage of samples including polymer and biological materials, and will be widely used in various fields of material and life sciences in the near future. An important challenge in real-world biomedical applications of x-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) techniques is the efficient use of the photon flux generated by an incoherent and polychromatic x-ray source. This efficiency can directly influence dose and exposure time and ideally should not affect the superior contrast and sensitivity of XPCI. In this paper, we present a quantitative evaluation of the photon detection efficiency of two laboratory-based XPCI methods, grating interferometry (GI) and coded-aperture (CA). We adopt a Monte Carlo approach to simulate existing prototypes of those systems, tailored for mammography applications. Our simulations were validated by means of a simple experiment performed on a CA XPCI system. Our results show that the fraction of detected photons in the standard energy range of mammography are about 1.4% and 10% for the GI and CA techniques, respectively. The simulations indicate that the design of the optical components plays an important role in the higher efficiency of CA compared to the GI method. It is shown that the use of lower absorbing materials as the substrates for GI gratings can improve its flux efficiency by up to four times. Along similar lines, we also show that an optimized and compact configuration of GI could lead to a 3.5 times higher fraction of detected counts compared to a standard and non-optimised GI implementation.

Edge-illumination x-ray phase contrast imaging (EI XPCI) is a non-interferometric phase-sensitive method where two absorption masks are employed. These masks are fabricated through a photolithography process followed by electroplating which is challenging in terms of yield as well as time-and cost-effectiveness. We report on the first implementation of EI XPCI with Pt-based metallic glass masks fabricated by an imprinting method. The new tested alloy exhibits good characteristics including high workability beside high x-ray attenuation. The fabrication process is easy and cheap, and can produce large-size masks for high x-ray energies within minutes. Imaging experiments show a good quality phase image, which confirms the potential of these masks to make the EI XPCI technique widely available and affordable.

An X-ray phase tomogram was successfully obtained with an exposure time of less than 10ms by X-ray grating interferometry, an X-ray phase imaging technique that enables high-sensitivity X-ray imaging even of materials consisting of light elements. This high-speed X-ray imaging experiment was performed at BL28B2, SPring-8, where a white X-ray beam is available, and the tomogram was reconstructed from projection images recorded at a frame rate of 100,000 fps. The setup of the experiment will make it possible to realize three-dimensional observation of unrepeatable high-speed phenomena with a time resolution of less than 10 ms. For the effective interferometric imaging at pulsed neutron sources, we have developed the Talbot-Lau interferometer which works at several wavelengths, and demonstrated its operation by observing the visibilities of moirE fringes in different wavelength conditions. An absorption grating as an analyzer was fabricated by imprinting of metallic glass for the first time, and showed a well-controlled shape. Using such a grating, we have succeeded in interferometric imaging for the samples of metal rods at a wavelength of 5 angstrom.

Metallic glass (MG) exhibits viscous flow behavior in the supercooled liquid (SCL) state, which is of great advantage for its net-forming process. However, the viscous workability varies strongly with the alloy system and/or composition. In this paper, we demonstrate how MG with less viscous workability such as Gd-based MG can be processed in the SCL region. Based on this understanding, high aspect ratio analyzer gratings of 9 mu m pitch and similar to 30 mu m heights have been fabricated through an imprinting method by allowing crystallization during a rapid heating isochronal imprinting process. The analyzer gratings made of Gd-based MG have brought a breakthrough for advancing neutron phase imaging based on grating interferometer. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A high-aspect-ratio absorption grating with a pitch of several mu m is a key component of X-ray grating interferometery, which is an X-ray phase imaging technique that allows for highly sensitive X-ray imaging with a compact laboratory X-ray source. Here, we report that X-ray phase imaging was successfully performed at 15 keV by using a 23 +/- 1-mu m-height, 9-mu m-pitch absorption grating (10 x 10 mm(2)) based on Gd (Gd60Cu25Al15) fabricated by a metallic glass imprinting technique. The mammalian skeleton stores calcium and phosphate ions in bone matrix. Osteocytes in osteocyte lacunae extend numerous dendrites into canaliculi less than a micron in diameter and which are distributed throughout bone matrix. Although osteoclasts are the primary bone-resorbing cells, osteocytes also reportedly dissolve hydroxyapatite at peri-lacunar bone matrix. However, robust three-dimensional evidence for peri-canalicular bone mineral dissolution has been lacking. Here we applied a previously reported Talbot-defocus multiscan tomography method for synchrotron X-ray microscopy and analyzed the degree of bone mineralization in mouse cortical bone around the lacuno-canalicular network, which is connected both to blood vessels and the peri- and endosteum. We detected cylindrical low mineral density regions spreading around canaliculi derived from a subset of osteocytes. Transmission electron microscopy revealed both intact and demineralized bone matrix around the canaliculus. Peri-canalicular low mineral density regions were also observed in osteopetrotic mice lacking osteoclasts, indicating that osteoclasts are dispensable for peri-canalicular demineralization. These data suggest demineralization can occur from within bone through the canalicular system, and that peri-canalicular demineralization occurs not uniformly but directed by individual osteocytes. Blockade of peri-canalicular demineralization may be a therapeutic strategy to increase bone mass and quality. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.

We have launched a project to promote grating-based X-ray phase imaging/tomography extensively. Here, two main activities are presented for enabling dynamic, or four-dimensional, X-ray phase tomography and nanoscopic X-ray phase tomography by grating interferometry. For the former, while some demonstrations in this direction were performed with white synchrotron radiation, improvement in image quality by spectrum tuning is described. A preliminary result by a total reflection mirror is presented, and as a next step, preparation of a 10% bandpass filter by a multilayer mirror is reported. For the latter, X-ray microscopes available both at synchrotron radiation facilities and laboratories equipped with a Fresnel zone plate are combined with grating interferometry. Here, a preliminary result with a combination of a Lau interferometer and a laboratory-based X-ray microscope is presented.

Endochondral ossification is a developmental process by which cartilage is replaced by bone. Terminally differentiated hypertrophic chondrocytes are calcified, vascularized, and removed by chondroclasts before bone matrix is laid down by osteoblasts. In mammals, the malleus is one of three auditory ossicles that transmit vibrations of the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. The malleus is formed from a cartilaginous precursor without growth plate involvement, but little is known about how bones of this type undergo endochondral ossification. Here, we demonstrate that in the processus brevis of the malleus, clusters of osteoblasts surrounding the capillary loop produce bone matrix, causing the volume of the capillary lumen to decrease rapidly in post-weaning mice. Synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy revealed a concentric, cylindrical arrangement of osteocyte lacunae along capillaries, indicative of pericapillary bone formation. Moreover, we report that overexpression of Fosl1, which encodes a component of the AP-1 transcription factor complex, in osteoblasts significantly blocked malleal capillary narrowing. These data suggest that osteoblast/endothelial cell interactions control growth plate-free endochondral ossification through 'osteogenic capillaries' in a Fosl1-regulated manner.

X-ray grating interferometry has been highlighted in the last decade as a multi-modal X-ray phase-imaging technique for providing absorption, differential phase, and visibility-contrast images. It has been mainly reported that the visibility contrast in the visibility-contrast image originates from unresolvable random microstructures. In this paper, we show that the visibility contrast is even reduced by a uniform sample with flat surfaces due to the so-called "beam-hardening effect", which has to be taken into account when X-rays with a continuous spectrum is used. We drive a criterion for determining whether the beam-hardening effect occurs or not, and propose a method for correcting the effect of beam hardening on a visibility-contrast image. We investigated effects of unresolvable sharp edges on images obtained in a grating-based X-ray differential phase imaging technique. Results of numerical calculations for monochromatic X-rays show that an unresolvable sharp edge generates not only differential-phase contrast but also visibility contrast. The latter shows that the visibility contrast has another major origin other than ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) from randomly distributed unresolvable microstructures, which has been considered the main origin for the contrast. The effects were experimentally confirmed using a synchrotron X-ray source. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

The X-ray phase imaging method has been applied to observe soft biological tissues, and it is possible to image the soft tissues by using the benefit of the so-called "Talbot effect" by an X-ray grating. One type of the X-ray phase imaging method was reported by combining an X-ray imaging microscope equipped by a Fresnel zone plate with a phase grating. Using the fringe scanning technique, a high-precision phase shift image could be obtained by displacing the grating step by step and measuring dozens of sample images. The number of the images was selected to reduce the error caused by the non-sinusoidal component of the Talbot self-image at the imaging plane. A larger number suppressed the error more but increased radiation exposure and required higher mechanical stability of equipment. In this paper, we analyze the approximation error of fringe scanning technique for the X-ray microscopy which uses just one grating and proposes an improved algorithm. We compute the approximation error by iteration and substitute that into the process of reconstruction of phase shift. This procedure will suppress the error even with few sample images. The results of simulation experiments show that the precision of phase shift image reconstructed by the proposed algorithm with 4 sample images is almost the same as that reconstructed by the conventional algorithm with 40 sample images. We also have succeeded in the experiment with real data. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

We present the theoretical description of the image formation with the in-line germanium Bragg Magnifier Microscope (BMM) and the first successful phase retrieval of X-ray holograms recorded with this imaging system. The conditions under which the BMM acts as a linear shift invariant system are theoretically explained and supported by the experiment. Such an approach simplifies the mathematical treatment of the image formation and reconstruction as complicated propagation of the wavefront onto inclined planes can be avoided. Quantitative phase retrieval is demonstrated using a test sample and a proof of concept phase imaging of a spider leg is also presented. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

We report on a metallic glass imprinting technique for fabricating an interferometer grating. We successfully fabricated an 8-mu m-pitch, 10-mu m-thick grating (26 mm(2)) made of Pd42.5Ni7.5Cu30P20 metallic glass by using the technique, and as a demonstration we also performed X-ray phase imaging with the grating. It is difficult to inspect packaged devices such as IC packages and power modules because the devices contain various components, such as semiconductors, metals, ceramics, and resin. In this paper, we demonstrated the effectiveness of X-ray grating interferometry (XGI) using a laboratory X-ray tube for the industrial inspection of packaged devices. The obtained conventional absorption image showed heavy-elemental components such as metal wires and electrodes, but the image did not reveal the defects in the light-elemental components. On the other hand, the differential phase-contrast image obtained by XGI revealed microvoids and scars in the encapsulant of the samples. The visibility contrast image also obtained by XGI showed some cracks in the ceramic insulator of power module sample. In addition, the image showed the silicon plate surrounded by the encapsulant having the same X-ray absorption coefficient. While these defects and components are invisible in the conventional industrial X-ray imaging, XGI thus has an attractive potential for the industrial inspection of the packaged devices. Stroboscopic X-ray Talbot interferometry that is applicable to time-resolved quantitative X-ray phase imaging of periodic processes in soft materials is demonstrated. The constraint in photon flux was overcome by employing the stroboscopic technique of repeatedly capturing an image of the object at a specific phase of motion and by using polychromatic X-ray sources. By utilizing white synchrotron radiation in conjunction with a high-speed CMOS camera, stroboscopic X-ray Talbot interferometry with a 3 mu s temporal resolution was achieved. By incorporating a chopper into a laboratory X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer, a 5 ms temporal resolution was achieved. (c) 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

The three-dimensional network of lacunae and canaliculi that regulates metabolism in bone contains osteocytes and their dendritic processes. We constructed a synchrotron radiation X-ray microscope for sequential tomography of mouse tibia first by using a Talbot interferometer to detect the degree of bone mineralization and then by using absorption contrast under a slightly defocused setting to enhance outline contrast thereby visualizing structures of the osteocyte lacuno-canalicular network. The resultant pair of tomograms was precisely aligned with each other, allowing evaluation of mineral density in the vicinity of each osteocyte lacuna and canaliculus over the entire thickness of the cortical bone. Thus, multiscan microscopic X-ray tomography is a powerful tool for analyzing bone mineralization in relation to the lacuno-canalicular network at the submicron resolution level. Wavefront measurement for a hard-X-ray nanobeam using single-grating interferometry based on the Talbot effect and the Fourier transform method was demonstrated in the 1-km-long beamline of SPring-8. 10 keV X-rays were one-dimensionally focused down to 32 nm using a total-reflection elliptical mirror. An intentionally distorted wavefront was generated using a deformable mirror placed just upstream of the focusing mirror. The wavefront measured by interferometry was cross-checked with the phase retrieval method using intensity profiles around the beam waist. Comparison of the obtained wavefront errors revealed that they are in good agreement with each other and with the wavefront error estimated from the shape of the deformable mirror at a similar to 0.5 rad level. The problem of finding a solution to an ill-posed linear problem Ax = b, with specific statistical properties is addressed, constraining the statistical moments of the elements in up to a given order. It is reformulated as a higher dimension minimization problem with variables, whose objective function is the composition of a convex function and a projection. Although convergence to a local minima is possible in rare cases, simulations show that in the vast majority of the cases, global convergence is attained with a standard descent algorithm. By extension, this opens the possibility to efficiently solve a larger class of problems that are linear in the powers of x. The tomographic reconstruction from a limited number of projection angles, constrained by centered moments, is considered as an example.

One of the advantages of X-ray grating interferometry is that it can work with spherical-wave illumination of X-rays. This means that the interferometry can be combined with an X-ray imaging microscopy to achieve a high spatial resolution. We have developed three types of X-ray phase imaging microscopies, which are based on a self-imaging phenomenon called the Talbot effect. The first type is an X-ray imaging microscopy just combined with X-ray Talbot interferometry, where two transmission gratings are used. The other two are novel X-ray phase imaging microscopies, where the self-image of a transmission grating is highly magnified and resolved by an image detector: one has been achieved by a single X-ray source and the other is what we call Lau-type X-ray phase imaging microscopy, where an array of mutually incoherent X-ray sources has been used. These two microscopies have overcome several problems of the Talbot-interferometer-type X-ray imaging microscopy, i.e., they provide a phase difference image (twin phase images separated by a specific distance) and hence have high sensitivities and high spatial resolutions. Quantitative phase imaging even for non-weak-phase objects has also been performed that are difficult to be achieved by the widely used Zernike phase-contrast microscopy. In this paper, we outline a theoretical description of the three types of the X-ray imaging microscopes using transmission gratings as well as the corresponding three types of X-ray projection microscopes.

X-ray phase computed laminography is performed using a Talbot interferometer and synchrotron radiation. An iterative reconstruction algorithm which includes prior information about limited support, range of values and sparsity of the imaged object has been developped. It allows the reconstruction of objects with an improved resolution of the unsampled frequencies, compared to the classical filtered backprojection. The imaging method, demonstrated for a nylon mesh sample and a leaf sample, shows promising results for the imaging of flat, laterally extended objects made of low absorbing elements.

In the X-ray and neutron Talbot (-Lau) interferometry, fabrication of phase or amplitude grating with a high-aspect ratio is a key factor to obtain high quality images. To improve the ability of the grating, evaluation of shape and thickness variation and feed-back to the fabrication process are essential. Here, it is shown that X-ray projection microscope with a spatial resolution of sub-micrometer is a powerful tool for the purpose. Three kinds of gratings have been evaluated by using a projection X-ray microscope with X-ray source size of 0.6 micrometer. Uniformity of thickness of the grating has been visualized nondestructively.

Formulating a multi-scan method applied to an X-ray microscope CT with synchrotron radiation, we attempted to analyze the 3D functional structure of osteocyte canaliculi inside the cortical bone of a mouse tibia. We employed a two-method combination to scan the same position of the specimen. To extract the internal bone canalicular structure, we first combined a Talbot interferometer with an X-ray microscope, and applied a differential phase imaging method to measure the absolute value of bone mineral around the canaliculi. Next, we used the X-ray microscope without the Talbot interferometer under a defocus condition, moving the specimen toward the zone plate by 6 mm. This defocus contrast method visualizes the canaliculi by emphasizing the edges of the bone. We performed CT scans by the two configurations and precisely aligned resultant 3D images so that the same position in the specimen is compared. We could extract the osteocyte canaliculi and evaluate the mineral density of their surroundings. The degree of mineralization varied for each osteocyte lacuna and canaliculus. The multi-scan microscopic X-ray CT is a powerful tool for analyzing bone mineralization.

We propose a tomographic method using X-ray Talbot interferometry for mapping three-dimensional distribution of parameters characterizing microstructures, which are typically of the order of mu m in size and cannot be resolved by the imaging system, in a sample. In the method we use reduction in fringe visibility, which is due to such unresolvable microstructures, of moire images obtained in the interferometry. We applied this method to a sample of melamine sponge containing chloroprene rubber. We performed tomographies at several Talbot orders and obtained the dependencies of the reconstructed values on the Talbot order for voxels. The parameters obtained by the least-squares fitting to the dependencies were consistent with those previously obtained from projection images for each material. Our approach provides three-dimensional structural information on unresolvable microstructures in real space, which is only accessible through the ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) in reciprocal space, and is expected to be broadly applicable to material, biological, and medical sciences.

The Talbot interferometer using white synchrotron radiation has already been demonstrated for high-speed X-ray phase imaging and tomography as well as four-dimensional phase tomography for an observation of a dynamic specimen. In those previous experiments, the grating lines were oriented horizontally because the synchrotron radiation source size is large in the horizontal direction, and only the vertical spatial coherence satisfies the requirement for the operation of the Talbot interferometer given its distance from the source. For non-rigid samples, the horizontal axis of rotation causes unwanted motion of the sample due to gravity which results to artifact in the tomography reconstruction. For fluid samples, a vertical rotation axis is certainly necessary. While it is possible to orient the sample rotation axis perpendicular to the grating lines of the Talbot interferometer, solving the definite integral of the differential phase images to obtain the phase shift for x-ray phase tomography proves to be cumbersome when the sample extends outside the image and there is no null region for which the integration constant is known. In this work we aimed at increasing the spatial coherence of the x-rays along the horizontal so that the grating lines and the sample rotation axis could be oriented vertically. A Talbot-Lau interferometer was constructed by adding an absorption grating which acted as vertical line sources of horizontally spatially coherent white synchrotron radiation to the Talbot interferometer. An average of 20% moire fringe visibility was obtained. The set-up was demonstrated for highspeed phase tomography of a polymer sample.

High-speed X-ray phase tomography based on the Fourier-transform method has been demonstrated with an X-ray Talbot interferometer using white synchrotron radiation. We report the experimental results of high-speed X-ray phase tomography with fringe-scanning method instead of Fourier-transform method to improve spatial resolution without a considerable increase of scan time. To apply fringe-scanning method to high speed tomography, we tested a scan that is a synchronous combination of one-way continuous movements of the sample rotation and the grating displacement. When this scanning method was combined with X-ray phase tomography, we were able to obtain a scan time of 5 s. A comparison of the image quality derived with the conventional approach and with the proposed approach using the fringe-scanning method showed that the latter had better spatial resolution.

We are attempting to expand the technology of X-ray grating phase imaging/tomography to enable dynamic observation. X-ray phase imaging has been performed mainly for static cases, and this challenge is significant since properties of materials (and hopefully their functions) would be understood by observing their dynamics in addition to their structure, which is an inherent advantage of X-ray imaging. Our recent activities in combination with white synchrotron radiation for this purpose are described. Taking advantage of the fact that an X-ray grating interferometer functions with X-rays of a broad energy bandwidth (and therefore high flux), movies of differential phase images and visibility images are obtained with a time resolution of a millisecond. The time resolution of X-ray phase tomography can therefore be a second. This study is performed as a part of a project to explore X-ray grating interferometry, and our other current activities are also briefly outlined.

Four-dimensional X-ray phase tomography has been implemented by a combination of X-ray Talbot interferometry and white synchrotron radiation. While the Fourier-transform method has been used for the measurement of a differential phase image at every projection direction, an improved scan mode based on the fringe-scanning method is demonstrated to improve spatial resolution. The disadvantage of the fringe-scanning method, which requires multiple moire images, is overcome by proposing a scan mode synchronously combining one-way continuous movements of sample rotation and grating displacement. In addition, the operation of an X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer with white synchrotron radiation is reported. While an X-ray Talbot interferometer requires a horizontal sample rotation axis because of the condition of spatial coherency, such a horizontal rotation axis is not preferable for tomographic scans especially for soft objects. An X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer overcomes this problem, allowing a vertical sample rotation axis. Although we encountered a vibration problem with the X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer probably because of incomplete stage stability, our attempts have basically been successful, and we expect that various samples can be scanned by four-dimensional X-ray phase tomography, revealing dynamical properties in weakly absorbing objects that cannot be accessed by conventional X-ray phase tomography mainly performed for static samples.

In situ observation of the complex scattering amplitude of x-ray specular reflection (amplitude reflectivity) was performed by using a method with a multiwave x-ray diffraction phenomenon. The method can be applied to the noncrystalline layers on a single crystal and allows us to determine its amplitude reflectivity with only a 0.01 degree of crystal rotation, that is, the area irradiated by the incident x rays is almost unchanged during the measurement. We used this method to observe an irradiation effect induced by monochromatic synchrotron x-rays that occurred on a Si(001) single crystal covered with a native oxide layer. The obtained time evolution of the amplitude reflectivities exhibited counterclockwise behavior in the complex plane, indicating that the thickness of the noncrystalline layer on the crystalline substrate was increased by the irradiation. Phase-contrast X-ray computed laminography is demonstrated for the volume reconstruction of extended flat objects, not suitable to the usual tomographic scan. Using a Talbot interferometer, differential phase measurements are obtained and used to reconstruct the real part of the complex refractive index. The specific geometry of laminography leads to unsampled frequencies in a double cone in the reciprocal space, which degrades the spatial resolution in the direction normal to the object plane. First, the filtered backprojection formula from differential measurements is derived. Then, reconstruction is improved by the use of prior information of compact support and limited range, included in an iterative filtered backprojection algorithm. We have developed a hard-X-ray phase-imaging microscopy method using a low-brilliance X-ray source. The microscope consists of a sample, a Fresnel zone plate, a transmission grating, and a source grating creating an array of mutually incoherent X-ray sources. The microscope generates an image exhibiting twin features of the sample with opposite signs separated by a distance, which is processed to generate a phase image. The method is quantitative even for non-weak-phase objects that are difficult to be quantitatively examined by the widely used Zernike phase-contrast microscopy, and it has potentially broad applications in the material and biological science fields. X-ray phase imaging based on the Lau effect is demonstrated with an incoherent laboratory X-ray source. Its optical configuration resembles the inverse geometry of the X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer, which employs a large-area amplitude grating. However, the proposed approach avoids the use and hence fabrication difficulty of such a grating, which is advantageous when constructing an X-ray phase imaging apparatus. With a Mo-target source, differential phase images of polymer spheres were successfully obtained and a design concept for downsizing the system is also described. X-ray Talbot interferometry is attractive as a method for X-ray phase imaging and phase tomography for objects that weakly absorb X-rays. Because X-ray Talbot interferometry has the advantage that X-rays of a broad energy bandwidth can be used, high-speed X-ray phase imaging is possible with white synchrotron radiation. In this paper, we demonstrate time-resolved three-dimensional observation with X-ray Talbot interferometry (namely, four-dimensional X-ray phase tomography). Differential phase images, from which a phase tomogram was reconstructed, were obtained through the Fourier-transform method, unlike the phase-stepping method that requires several (at least three) moire images to be measured sequentially in order to generate one differential phase image. We demonstrate dynamic observation of a living worm in three dimensions with a time resolution of 0.5 s, visualizing a drastic change in the respiratory tract. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

We report hard x-ray phase imaging and tomography consisting of an objective lens and a transmission grating. Our simple microscopy system provides a quantitative phase image even for a strong phase object, and it works by partially coherent illumination on the objective lens. We successfully performed phase imaging and tomography using our method. Our approach may prove to be a powerful way for biologists and material scientists to quantitatively visualize internal structures even in relatively thick samples with high spatial resolution and high sensitivity.

We formulated reduction in visibility in the x-ray Talbot interferometer by the autocorrelation function of spatial fluctuations of a wavefront caused by unresolvable micron-size structures in a sample. The experimental results for several isotropic samples were well fitted by our formula with a simple model having three parameters characterizing the wavefront fluctuations: variance, correlation length, and the Hurst exponent. The Hurst exponent is relevant to the shapes of the microstructures, while the correlation length can be interpreted to their average size. Thus our results opens a new way to analyze microstructures in a sample.

Neural circuits in the central nervous system are the substrate of various high-order brain functions. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying neuronal information processing in the brain. Anatomical and functional graph structures of neural networks with actual connections will provide us with perspectives to elucidate the brain complexity. Here, we aim to develop a three-dimensional mouse brain atlas of neural circuits using nano-resolution x-ray tomography by synchrotron radiation. In addition to identifying a large number of synapses, our research will also clarify the structure of neuronal networks for understanding the most complex organ in the body. In this study, we observed metal-stained biological tissues of the mouse brain using hard x-ray Zernike-type phase-contrast microscopy with 60-nm resolution at SPring-8. As a result, the nano-resolution hard x-ray phase-contrast microscope revealed nerve fibers and organelles including mitochondria and synapses in the neural tissue. In the near future, this information will be utilized to begin deciphering the wiring diagram of the brain by using nano-resolution x-ray tomography.

Modulation of the intensity of crystal-truncation-rod (CTR) scattering caused by a Bragg reflection, which is a multiple-wave X-ray diffraction phenomenon, is generally formulated. This phenomenon is sensitive to the phase of the CTR scattering amplitude, and can be used to investigate mesoscopic-scale small strain field in a crystal, which can be difficult to be found by only intensity measurement of the CTR scattering around a Bragg point. Conditions are presented under which a strain field gives only a slight change in the intensity of CTR scattering but largely affects the phase of it. We demonstrate analytically that, even in such a case, the strain field can be investigated by measurement of the intensity of CTR scattering modulated by a Bragg reflection.

We report on a hard-x-ray imaging microscope consisting of a lens, a sample, and a transmission grating. After the theoretical framework of self-imaging phenomenon by the grating in the system is presented, equations for the electric field on the image plane are derived for ideal and real lenses and an equation for the intensity on the image plane for partially coherent illumination is derived. The equations are simple and similar to those applying to a projection microscope consisting of a transmission grating except that there is no defocusing effect, regardless of whether the grating is in front of or behind the lens. This means that x-ray phase-imaging microscopy can be done without the defocusing effect. It is also shown that, by resolving the self-image on the image plane, high-sensitive x-ray phase-imaging microscopy can be attained without degradation in the spatial resolution due to diffraction by the grating. Experimental results obtained using partially coherent illumination from a synchrotron x-ray source confirm that hard-x-ray phase-imaging microscopy can be quantitatively performed with high sensitivity and without the spatial resolution degradation. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

The reduction in visibility in x-ray grating interferometry based on the Talbot effect is formulated by the autocorrelation function of spatial fluctuations of a wavefront due to unresolved micron-size structures in samples. The experimental results for microspheres and melamine sponge were successfully explained by this formula with three parameters characterizing the wavefront fluctuations: variance, correlation length, and the Hurst exponent. The ultra-small-angle x-ray scattering of these samples was measured, and the scattering profiles were consistent with the formulation. Furthermore, we discuss the relation between the three parameters and the features of the micron-sized structures. The visibility-reduction contrast observed by x-ray grating interferometry can thus be understood in relation to the structural parameters of the microstructures. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Taking advantage of the fact that an X-ray Talbot interferometer functions with X-rays of a broad energy band width, high-speed X-ray phase imaging and tomography have been achieved by using white synchrotron light. An X-ray phase tomogram could be measured with a 0.25 s exposure. Furthermore, a series of X-ray phase tomograms, in other words, a four-dimensional X-ray phase tomogram, could be reconstructed with a tomogram frame rate of 25.5 fps. This achievement advances X-ray phase imaging/tomography from a technique for static imaging to one for dynamic imaging of weakly absorbing objects.

We report on a hard X-ray phase imaging microscopy (a phase-difference microscopy) that consists of an objective and a transmission grating. The simple optical system provides a quantitative phase image, and does not need a wave field mostly coherent on the objective. Our method has a spatial resolution almost same as that of the absorption contrast microscope image obtained by removing the grating. We demonstrate how our approach provides a phase image from experimentally obtained images. Our approach is attractive for easily appending a quantitative phase-sensitive mode to normal X-ray microscopes, and has potentially broad applications in biology and material sciences.

Taking advantage of the fact that an X-ray Talbot interferometer functions with X-rays of a broad energy bandwidth, high-speed X-ray phase tomography has been demonstrated by using white synchrotron light. Time resolution in addition to three-dimensional spatial resolution has been attained, and we report this achievement as the first four-dimensional (4D) X-ray phase tomography. Moire image movies of samples rotating at a speed of 1 or 2 rps generated by a Talbot interferometer were recorded at a frame rate of up to 1 kf/s, and differential phase image movies of the same frame rate were created by the Fourier-transform method. Consequently, a sub-second time resolution was achieved in the 4D phase tomography, while the spatial resolution was below 0.1 mm and 0.05 mm in axial and in-plane directions, respectively. An X-ray Talbot interferometer generates visibility images in addition to differential phase images, showing the distribution of microstructures, which cause ultra-small angle scattering but cannot be resolved individually with system spatial resolution. Tomographic image reconstruction from the visibility images was also demonstrated.

Laminography is a technique for 3D volume reconstruction, extending the classical tomography to the estimation of local areas in lamellar objects. We demonstrate X-ray phase laminography by using an X-ray Talbot interferometer consisting of two transmission gratings, which has been used only for X-ray phase tomography. In this presentation, experiments using 17.7 keV synchrotron radiation through a double-crystal monochromator are reported. The X-rays passed through the sample placed in front of the first phase grating. The rotation axis of the sample was set almost parallel to the sample plane normal, and inclined from the X-ray beam. Behind the second amplitude grating, moire fringe patterns were measured by displacing one of the gratings in the direction parallel to its diffraction vector. Differential phase information were extracted through the fringe-scanning method. For the reconstruction of the three-dimensional volume from the differential phase information, the filtered back projection method was used with a specific filtering function. Promising results of phase laminography reconstruction are obtained for simulation data as well as weakly absorbing lamellar objects such as a polymer meshes and other samples. This advancement extends experiments with X-ray Talbot volume reconstruction to a larger variety of samples.

We report three applications of X-ray grating interferometry, which employs X-ray transmission gratings, to Xray phase imaging and phase tomography for weakly absorbing objects. The fusion with a normal X-ray imaging microscope enabled phase-sensitive microscopic observation. The operation with a white synchrotron light enabled highspeed X-ray imaging and furthermore four-dimensional phase tomography. Finally, the development of a practical phase imaging technique using a conventional X-ray generator is reported for future clinical applications.

Novel hard x-ray phase imaging microscopy that simply uses an objective and a transmission grating is described. The microscope generated an image that exhibited twin features of a sample with an opposite phase contrast having a separation of a specific distance. Furthermore, the twin features were processed to generate an image mapping the x-ray phase shift through a simple algorithm. The presence of the grating did not degrade the spatial resolution of the microscope. The sensitivity of our microscope to light elements was about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the absorption contrast microscope that was attained by simply removing the grating. Our method is attractive for easily appending a quantitative phase-sensitive mode to normal x-ray microscopies, and it has potentially broad applications in biology and material sciences.

Differential phase-contrast X-ray imaging has been performed in a Talbot-Lau configuration, where a multiline X-ray source was used instead of a combination of a hard-X-ray multiple slit and a normal focus X-ray generator. When the multiple slit is used, a high aspect ratio structure is needed and slit width should be below 10 mu m for its function. The fabrication and use of such a multislit can be omitted using the presented configuration. The multiline X-ray source was developed by making grooves on a tungsten rotating anode, which was irradiated by an electron beam to generate X-rays. An array of 10 mu m line sources with a pitch of 30 mu m was formed and combined with a 4.5 gm pitch phase grating and a 5.3 mu m pitch amplitude grating to generate differential phase contrast. With a total exposure time of 40 s, a differential phase image depicting cartilages was obtained. (C) 2009 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

X-ray radiographic imaging technique has found applications in various fields. However, it is not enough to get clear X-ray images of samples with low absorbance, such as biological soft tissues. To resolve this problem, we proposed a method using an X-ray Talbot interferometer of X-ray phase imaging. In this X-ray Talbot interferometer, X-ray gratings were required to have a fine, high accuracy, high aspect ratio structure. Then, we have developed and succeeded high aspect ratio X-ray gratings with a pitch of 5.3 μm and a height of 30 μm using X-ray lithography technique. We discuss that the X-ray gratings having a large effective area in order to obtain imaging size of practical use in medical application. In currently study, we have fabricated the X-ray gratings with a large effective area of 60 mm×60 mm. And, we conducted X-ray phase tomography of mouse at the chest and abdominal using X-ray Talbot interferometer. As a result, we successfully observed soft tissues and high density tissues. With the aim of broadening a field of view, we try to fabricate X-ray gratings that have a pitch of below 5.3 μm and larger area of 100 mm square. This result suggests that X-ray Talbot interferometer is a novel and simple method for phase sensitive X-ray radiography.

A new type of differential phase X-ray imaging microscopy attained by combination of an X-ray imaging microscope and an X-ray Talbot interferometer is described. An X-ray Talbot interferometer was set up so that a moire-fringe pattern appeared on the image plane of an Xray imaging microscope. The wavefront inclination (differential phase shift) caused by a weakly absorbing polymer sample was measured from the fringes using the fringe-scanning method and with a spatial resolution of 1 pm. The sensitivity of X-ray phase imaging based on Talbot interferometry is discussed. In order to evaluate the superiority of the technique to the conventional absorption-contrast method, which relies on X-ray absorption, a criterion is proposed. An experimental result of X-ray phase imaging with a Talbot interferometer is compared with the criterion. The criterion is also available for X-ray phase imaging based on Talbot-Lau interferometry. The advantage of X-ray phase imaging based on Talbot(-Lau) interferometry is more prominent when smaller structures are observed with smaller pixels.. [DOI: 10.1143/JJAP.47.8077]

X-ray imaging is a very important technology in the fields of medical, biological, inspection, material science, etc. However, it is not enough to get the clear X-ray imaging with low absorbance. We have produced a diffraction gratings for obtaining high resolution X-ray phase imaging, such as X-ray Talbot interferometer. In this X-ray Talbot interferometer, diffraction gratings were required to have a fine, high accuracy, high aspect ratio structure. Then, we succeeded to fabricate a high aspect ratio diffraction grating with a pitch of 8 mu m and small area using a deep X-ray lithography technique. We discuss that the diffraction gratings having a narrow pitch and an large effective area to obtain imaging size of practical use in medical application. If the pitch of diffraction gratings were narrow, it is expected high resolution imaging for X-ray Talbot interferometer. We succeeded and fabricated the diffraction grating with pitch of 5.3 mu m, Au height of 28 mu m and an effective area of 60 x 60 mm(2).

We propose using a multiple slit fabricated by a simple and economical stacked-sliced method for X-ray phase imaging with a Talbot-Lau X-ray interferometer. Foils off a and AI were stacked alternately. and the stack was sliced tip perpendicular to the stacking direction. We Successfully fabricated a hard X-ray multiple slit with a space size (A1 foil thickness) of about 10 mu m and an aspect ratio of 60. Optical microscopy evaluation Showed its regular pitch pattern at its surface. A high-resolution Xray transmission image proved the regularity of the inner part. The visibility of moire fringes and the phase-contrast image obtained using the Talbot-Lau interferometer with the multiple slit proved the feasibility of the stacked-sliced approach.

We assesses the efficiency of x-ray Talbot interferometry (XTI), a technique based on the Talbot effect for measuring a wavefront gradient, in terms of how quickly it can capture a high-quality phase image with a large signal-to-noise ratio for a given incident photon number. Photon statistics cause errors in the phase of the moire fringes and impose a detection limit on the wavefront gradient. The relation between the incident photon number and the detection limit is determined, and a figure of merit of XTI for a monochromatic cone beam is then defined. The dependence of the figure of merit on optical system parameters, such as grating pitch and position, is then discussed. The effects of varying the pattern height and linewidth of the second grating are shown for rectangular and trapezoidal teeth. Finally, we show how to design a practical cone-beam Talbot interferometer for certain boundary conditions. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America.

The X-ray lithography of uses synchrotron radiation is one of the microprocessing structure fabrication technology. In X-ray lithography, precision of the fabricated structure is influenced by precision of the X-ray mask considerably. Conventionally, the X-ray mask was fabricated with UV lithography. However, it is difficult to fabricate the highly precise X-ray mask because of the tapering X-ray absorber. We introduces the ability of Si dry etching technology into UV lithography in order to fabricate untapered, high precision X-ray masks containing rectangular patterns. This new X-ray mask fabrication method uses a high-precision microstructure pattern formed by Si dry etching, thereby fabricating high aspect ratio, narrow line width resist microstructures that cannot be achieved by any conventional technology. An Au for the X-ray absorber is made to the groove of the structure, and it is formed by electroplating. The silicon substrate itself is used as seed layer and the structure is fabricated with the photo resist whose resistance is higher than silicon. It can be expected the gilding growth from only the bottom layer. High-density Au functions sufficiently as an absorber. Au plating was formed only from the base of the structure ditch and could bury Au of thickness 3.5 mu m in a narrow place of 2.7 mu m in width well. The fabricated structure using X-ray lithography. Highly-precise rectangular structure could be fabricated.

Determining electron density in a material model-independently by X-ray diffraction has been a critical problem and actively Studied since the middle of the 20th century. All the information that call be experimentally obtained by X-ray diffraction is only oil intensity distribution, so that the information oil the phase of scattering amplitude is lost, which prevents us from retrieving electron density model-independently. This is the so-called 'phase problem'. The phase problem in Surface and interface crystallogaphy has been one of interesting subjects in recent years. The present paper will focus on recent progress in solving the phase problem in Surface and interface crystallography.

Strain field under Si(3)N(4)/Si(001) interface formed by nitrogen-hydrogen (NH) radicals (the Xe/NH(3) plasma nitridation) was investigated by using a multiple-wave X-ray diffraction phenomenon, i.e., interaction between Bragg reflection and crystal-truncation-rod (CTR) scattering. Information on distribution of strain field induced by Si(3)N(4)/Si(001) interface was qualitatively obtained, and compared with the results of SiO(2)/Si(001) interfaces formed by the thermal oxidations (wet and dry oxidations) and the Kr/O(2) plasma oxidation; strain field induced the nitridation by NH radicals was similar to that by the Kr/O(2) plasma oxidation, but different from those by the thermal oxidations.

We have devoted our efforts toward developing transmission X-ray diffraction (TXD) for surface and interface from the viewpoint of realizing more efficient and precise structural analysis than the conventional surface X-ray diffraction. Here, we investigated bismuth lines embedded in a Si(001) substrate, which are promising templates applicable to nanometer-scale device, by TXD. In our experiments with synchrotron X-rays typical one-dimensional diffraction patterns were observed, which obviously indicates that the bismuth lines are still preserved in interface at the atomic scale.

A multiple-wave X-ray diffraction phenomenon, i.e., interaction between Bragg reflection and crystal-truncation-rod (CTR) scattering, is applied to characterize strain field under SiO2/Si(001) interface. Application of this phenomenon to strain characterization allows us to reveal that there is very small strain field extending over a mesoscopic-scale depth under the SiO2/Si interface and having a static fluctuation in the lateral direction. It also allows us to obtain information on distribution of strain field. In this paper oxidation-process dependence of strain distribution is discussed: some recently obtained results of wet oxidations at 900°C and 1100°C are compared with those of dry oxidation and Kr/O2 plasma oxidation. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

X-ray phase imaging with a single phase grating based on the fractional Talbot effect is described. A phase grating with an 8 mu m pitch was placed behind a weakly absorbing object and illuminated with partially coherent 17.7 keV X-rays. Intensity patterns downstream of the grating were recorded with a high-resolution image detector. By the fringe scanning method, an Xray wavefront inclination by the object was obtained. Phase tomography was performed and the three-dimensional structure of a piece of a polymer blend was revealed with an 8 mu m spatial resolution and a 9 mg/cm(3) detection limit of density deviation.

We performed a quantitative three-dimensional observation of polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends by X-ray phase tomography mainly using the crystal X-ray interferometer at the beamline 20XU of SPring-8, Japan. We observed the time change in the phase-separated structures of PS/PNUvIA blends annealed at 180'C. We also measured the densities of PS- and PMMA-rich regions in a series of PS/PMMA blends annealed in the temperature range from 220 to 300 degrees C and determined part of the phase diagram of these blends. Finally, we performed a preliminary trial of X-ray phase tomography using an X-ray Talbot interferometer, which will facilitate better control of the environment around a sample than that possible with a crystal X-ray interferometer.

A preliminary experiment of X-ray phase microtomography by a single phase grating is reported. A phase grating was placed behind an object and illuminated by spatially coherent X-rays. At a specific distance from the grating, a periodic intensity pattern caused by the fractional Talbot effect was recorded with a high spatial-resolution image detector. A differential phase map related to the object was retrieved from the deformation in the periodic intensity pattern on the basis of the fringe scanning method. Phase tomograms of a piece of polymer blend were reconstructed and a phase-separation structure in the blend was successfully resolved.

The X-ray phase tomography of biological samples is reported, which is based on X-ray Talbot interferometry. Its imaging principle is described in detail, and imaging results obtained for a cancerous rabbit liver and a mouse tail with synchrotron radiation are presented. Because an amplitude grating is needed to construct an X-ray Talbot interferometer, a high-aspect-ratio grating pattern was fabricated by X-ray lithography and gold electroplating. X-ray Talbot interferometry has an advantage that it functions with polychromatic cone-beam X-rays. Finally, the compatibility with a compact X-ray source is discussed.

X-ray-based imaging measurement has found applications in fields such as medical diagnosis and nondestructive inspection, having become one of essential technologies. However, its low sensitivity to biologically soft tissues limits scope of applications. several methods have been developed for X-ray phase imaging, We proposed a method using an X-ray Talbot interferometer. It offers advantages; it is a very simple setup using two gratings; it has a potential of phase imaging with a compact laboratory X-ray source. but the fabrication of an amplitude X-ray grating is a difficult. because the structure of grating must have high aspect ratio. We used deep X-ray lithography and electroforming of Au in fabricating gratings. The period and height of the grating were 5.3 mu m and 31 mu m. We evaluated the gratings, successfully achieved a high visibility of 71%. With the gratings that had a period of 8 mu m and a height of 29 mu m, we conducted X-ray phase tomography of rabbit liver and a mouse tail. As a result, we successfully observed soft tissues and high-density tissues. The gratings, therefore, had sufficient performance to conduct phase tomography.

Recently, several kinds of atomic-scale wires have been reported for nano-scale device and interconnect applications. The Bi nanoline is one of the most promising candidates because of its structural perfection and the capability to be buried in an epitaxial Si layer. A surfactant layer of Bi is necessary for the encapsulation process., and this remains on the sample surface after the burial, but it needs to be removed so that the buried Bi line may be properly characterized by I-V measurements, X-ray diffraction, etc. without perturbations from the surface layer. It is shown by RHEED observation that the thermal desorption is not suitable for this purpose, because the one-dimensional structure of the buried Bi line is disrupted over the same time scale as for removal of the surfactant Bi. Chemical wet etching of the surface layer was found to be a better solution to the removal of the surfactant Bi atoms without destroying the buried Bi lines. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. A new method of calculating the crystal orientation matrix ( U matrix) of a specified sample using two-dimensional X-ray diffraction spots that are recorded on an area detector is presented. In this way, the U matrix is calculated using at least three two-dimensional diffraction spots of known two-dimensional indices, which provide the projection of the crystal truncation rod onto the detector. The method, in the case of surface X-ray diffraction measurements with an area detector, enables easier and faster sample alignment than the conventional method to determine the U matrix.

A nondestructive method has been developed for quickly characterizing a 1 D crystalline structure. It required brilliant synchrotron x-rays in grazing incidence and an x-ray 2 D detector. X-ray patterns recorded on the detector showed anisotropically sheet-shape diffraction from NiO nanowires epitaxially grown on an ultra-smooth sapphire (0001). Other shots obtained from Bi atomic wires embedded in Si (001) showed that the wires have a 2 x n superstructure, which indicated that the Bi-dimer bonds were parallel to the wires.

A new technique to observe mesoscopic-range strain fields (up to several hundreds of nm) is proposed, using modulation of the crystal-truncation-rod (CTR) scattering caused by Bragg reflection. This technique is particularly sensitive to small, long-range strain fields near crystal surfaces and interfaces, which are usually difficult to be discriminated by using Bragg reflection. A simple interpretation can be made for the modulation profile: the technique is physically simple with a few parameters fitted to the data and, independently of any model, is able to determine the total displacement due to mesoscopic strain field for depths up to several hundreds of nanometers. We applied this method to a Si(0 0 1) wafer whose surface is covered with a thermal oxide layer 3 nm thick. On the basis of the expressions we obtained for the modulation profile a least-squares fitting was carried out to give a result that under the oxide layer there exists a total displacement of -0.16 Angstrom. It was also revealed from the visibility of the modulation profile that the total displacement has a static fluctuation of at least +/-0.13 Angstrom in the lateral direction. The new method can be used for the correction of the errors of the X-ray standing wave (XSW) method produced by strained layers near crystal surfaces. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A phase retrieval method for noncrystalline surface layers that involves intensity modulation of the specular reflection under the excitation of a Bragg reflection was applied to a Si(001) single crystal covered with a native oxide layer of a few nanometers thickness. The phases and moduli of the amplitudes of the scatterings from the native oxide layer were uniquely retrieved at three points on the specular truncation rod. The phases and moduli obtained experimentally were consistently explained by a model of a Si(001) single crystal covered with a uniform oxide layer with a rough surface.

A probe-positioning method for micro-multi-point probes that can be independently driven is proposed. By the electron-beam lithography technique, we fabricated a 0.5 mmx0.5 mm-sized probe-positioning pattern matrix consisting of 750 nmx750 nm-sized cells. Each cell has 150 nmx150 nm-sized pits that represent a bit array, which specifies its address. Reading the address information on the pattern with the microprobes allowed us not only to determine the probe positions, but also to calibrate the orientation and dimension of each scan. A method for determining the phase of the X-ray specular reflection using the intensity modulation caused by a Bragg reflection is proposed. The method was applied to a Si(001) single crystal covered with a layer of native oxide a few nanometers thick. Measurement of intensity along the 00 rod (specular reflection) under excitation of the 113 Bragg reflection was carried out in the so-called (+,-) parallel arrangement, and intensity modulation of the specular reflection was observed. The phase of the specular reflection from the layer of native oxide was directly determined from the experimentally obtained modulation profile.

We studied a buried interface reconstructed structure of the Ag/Si(111)root3 x root3-Ag samples using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. We found that the root3 interface superstructure can be explained by an inequivalent-triangle (IET) model, which has been observed on the Si(1 1 1)root3 x root3-Ag surface at low substrate temperatures by STM. The calculated structure factors of the IET model were found to be very close to our observed ones. The reliability factor (R-factor) using the IET model was about 25%. The R-factor was improved to be much less value, 12% by considering defects of Ag atoms forming the root3 structure. The Patterson map expected from the IET model having the defects was very similar to that calculated from the observed structure factors. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The in-plane structure of Si(1 1 1)root 21 x root 21-(Ag + Au) surface was studied by using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction method. A total of 72 inequivalent fractional order reflections were obtained. The structural models are investigated including the previously proposed models. It is found that the Ag triangles and Si trimers are induced to displace considerably from the honeycomb chained triangle arrangement by the adsorption of Au atoms. From the analysis, the models with five Au atoms in the unit cell, which have the Au-Au interatomic distance peculiar to the root 21 x root 21 periodicity, are favored. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Darwin's dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction was studied in the case of grazing incidence geometry. It was shown that in such geometry the Darwin theory is not correct. In the two-beam case, the reflectivity of the specular reflection calculated by the original Darwin's theory was slightly different from that calculated by the well-known Fresnel formula. Furthermore, in the three-beam case, there were large discrepancies between the calculations by the Darwin theory and those by the extended dynamical theory proposed by Kishino and Kohra. These discrepancies were resolved when multiple scattering in an atomic plane was taken into account. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Theoretical and experimental studies have been made on crystal-truncation-rod (CTR) scattering when x rays satisfy the Bragg condition. Calculations were made on the basis of a dynamical theory in Darwin's approach extended to a multibeam case. Calculated results indicated that the profile of intensity changes of CTR scattering as a function of incident angle under the Bragg condition is sensitive to surface structures. It was made clear by kinematical treatment that the profile reflects x-ray intensity changes of the standing-wave field at an atomic layer on a substrate crystal when x-ray scattering amplitude by the surface layer is larger than CTR scattering amplitude by the substrate, particularly in the case of intensity measurements on fractional-order rods of superstructures formed on the substrate crystal. The experimental result obtained for a Si (001) crystal was in good agreement with the theoretical calculation. Detailed analysis suggested that a strain field caused by the native oxide layer spreads from the surface of the substrate crystal to a depth of hundreds of Angstrom.

Reflection and transmission coefficients of X-rays by a single atomic plane are obtained in the general case where the plane consists of any two-dimensional Bravais lattice and the incident and exit X-ray beams take any direction with respect to the plane. A formula obtained for the coefficients is written in a simple form, different from that obtained by Durbin [Acta Cryst. (1995), A51, 258-268]. This makes it possible to extend Darwin's dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction to general geometries which include the cases of asymmetric skew reflection and noncoplanar multibeam diffraction.
