Individuals with autism generally show better performance on operating physical objects than in communicating with people. However, we lack a plausible model of autism that explains why their physical and social capabilities develop in separate and unbalanced ways. This paper investigates this question from the viewpoint of "cognitive granularity," which refers to the size of the basic elements operable in one's cognitive system. While it is constrained by one's perceptual and motor resolution, cognitive granularity determines the level of abstraction at which one can efficiently predict and control the physical and social world. Recent findings in autism research, including preference for causal predictability and abnormalities in neuroanatomical density, suggest that individuals with autism have finer cognitive granularity they live in a different "Umwelt" from that which non-autistic people experience. The difference in cognitive granularity explains not only autistic individuals' unbalanced development as well as their difficulty in understanding others' minds, but also the spectrum of developmental styles in the entire population. Finally, from this unified perspective, we also discuss possible therapeutic interventions for autism. © Japanese Psychological Association 2013.

Keepon is a small creature-like robot designed for simple, natural, nonverbal interaction with children. The minimal design of Keepon's appearance and behavior is meant to intuitively and comfortably convey the robot's expressions of attention and emotion. For the past few years, we have been observing interactions between Keepon and children at various levels of physical, mental, and social development. With typically developing children, we have observed varying styles of play that suggest a progression in ontological understanding of the robot. With children suffering from developmental disorders such as autism, we have observed interactive behaviors that suggest Keepon's design is effective in eliciting a motivation to share mental states. Finally, in developing technology for interpersonal coordination and interactional synchrony, we have observed an important role of rhythm in establishing engagement between people and robots. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of work done with Keepon to date.

We present here a pilot study of child-robot interactions, in which we discuss developmental origins of human interpersonal communication. For the past few years, we have been observing 2- to 4-year-old children with autism interacting with Keepon, a creature-like robot that is only capable of expressing its attention (directing its gaze) and emotions (pleasure and excitement). While controlled by a remote experimenter, Keepon interacted with the children with its simple appearance and actions. With a sense of curiosity and security, the children spontaneously approached Keepon and engaged in dyadic interaction with it, which then extended to triadic interactions where they exchanged with adult caregivers pleasure and surprise they found in Keepon. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of these unfolding interactions suggests that autistic children possess the motivation to share mental states with others, which is contrary to the commonly held position that this motivation is impaired in autism. We assume Keepon's minimal expressiveness helped the children understand socially meaningful information, which then activated their intact motivation to share interests and feelings with others. We conclude that simple robots like Keepon would facilitate social interaction and its development in autistic children.

Internal (neuronal) representations in the brain are modified by our experiences, and this phenomenon is not unique to sensory and motor systems. Here, we show that different impressions obtained through social interaction with a variety of agents uniquely modulate activity of dorsal and ventral pathways of the brain network that mediates human social behavior. We scanned brain activity with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 16 healthy volunteers when they performed a simple matching-pennies game with a human, human-like android, mechanical robot, interactive robot, and a computer. Before playing this game in the scanner, participants experienced social interactions with each opponent separately and scored their initial impressions using two questionnaires. We found that the participants perceived opponents in two mental dimensions: one represented "mind-holderness" in which participants attributed anthropomorphic impressions to some of the opponents that had mental functions, while the other dimension represented "mind-readerness" in which participants characterized opponents as intelligent. Interestingly, this "mind-readerness" dimension correlated to participants frequently changing their game tactic to prevent opponents from envisioning their strategy, and this was corroborated by increased entropy during the game. We also found that the two factors separately modulated activity in distinct social brain regions. Specifically, mind-holderness modulated activity in the dorsal aspect of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and medial prefrontal and posterior paracingulate cortices, while mind-readerness modulated activity in the ventral aspect of TPJ and the temporal pole. These results clearly demonstrate that activity in social brain networks is modulated through pre-scanning experiences of social interaction with a variety of agents. Furthermore, our findings elucidated the existence of two distinct functional networks in the social human brain. Social interaction with anthropomorphic or intelligent-looking agents may distinctly shape the internal representation of our social brain, which may in turn determine how we behave for various agents that we encounter in our society. Robotics intersects with children in diverse ways; it opens new scientific research fields of understanding humans with collaborating with psychologies and other related fields. At the same time, it is expected to offer useful applications for early childhood education and therapy. But, it has to be recognized that the robotics technology could be a double-edged sword, meaning that it could be hazardous if we did not exploit it in appropriate ways. Robots are thought to have double character; sometimes they show human-like features but other times they just look like an object. We need to understand the character well and consider appropriate forms of application based on the character. In this paper, firstly we will review the past studies around robotics and children, and we will also discuss the potential risk of robotics for children. Then, we will propose some new ideas for the application of robotics for early childhood education and therapy, considering the double character of robots.

We propose a model of evolutionary communication with voice signs and motion signs between two robots. In our model, a robot recognizes other's action through reflecting its self body dynamics by a Multiple Timescale Recurrent Neural Network (MTRNN). Then the robot interprets the action as a sign by its own hierarchical Neural Network (NN). Each of them modifies their interpretation of signs by re-training the NN to adapt the other's interpretation throughout interaction between them. As a result of the experiment, we found that the communication kept evolving through repeating miscommunication and re-adaptation alternately, and induced the emergence of diverse new signs that depend on the robots' body dynamics through the generalization capability of MTRNN.

We propose a model of evolutionary interaction between two robots where signs used for communication emerge through mutual adaptation. Signs used in human interaction, e.g., language, gestures and eye contact change and evolve in firm and meaning through repeated use. To create flexible human-like interaction systems, it is necessary to deal with signs as a dynamic property and to construct a framework in which signs emerge from mutual adaptation by agents. Our target is multi-modal interaction using voice and motion between two robots where a voice/motion pattern is used as a sign referring to a motion/voice pattern. To enable evolutionary signs (voice and motion patterns) to be recognized and generated, we utilized a dynamics model: Multiple Timescale Recurrent Neural Network (MTRNN). To enable the robots to interpret signs, we utilized hierarchical neural networks, which transform dynamics model parameters of voice/motion into those of motion/voice. In our experiment, two robots modified their own interpretation of signs constantly through mutual adaptation in interaction where they responded to the other's voice with motion one after the other. As a result of the experiment, we found that the interaction kept evolving through the robots' repeated and alternate miscommunications and re-adaptations, and this induced the emergence of diverse new signs that depended on the robots' body dynamics through the generalization capability of MTRNN.

Human social behavior is rhythmic, and synchrony plays an important role in coordinating and regulating our interactions. We are developing technology that allows the robot Keepon to perceive and behave rhythmically, and to synchronize its dancing behaviors to music or to children's movement as perceived using pressure sensors. We present two experiments in which Keepon dances with children to music, and in which the robot's rhythmic attention and role of leader or follower are manipulated in order to examine the effects on engagement and rhythmic synchrony. We found that children can assume the roles of leader or follower in a rhythmic interaction, that followers indeed tend to synchronize with the robot's movements, and that the role of follower causes the children to more closely follow a musical rhythm.

Infants' sensitivity to social or behavioral contingency has been examined in the field of developmental psychology and behavioral sciences, mainly using a double video paradigm or a still face paradigm. These studies have shown that infants distinguish other individuals' contingent behaviors from non-contingent ones. The present experiment systematically examined if this ability extends to the detection of non-humanoids' contingent actions in a communicative context. We examined two-to three-year-olds' understanding of contingent actions produced by a non-humanoid robot. The robot either responded contingently to the actions of the participants (contingent condition) or programmatically reproduced the same sequence of actions to another participant (non-contingent condition). The results revealed that the participants exhibited different patterns of response depending on whether or not the robot responded contingently. It was also found that the participants did not respond positively to the contingent actions of the robot in the earlier periods of the experimental sessions. This might reflect the conflict between the non-humanlike appearance of the robot and its humanlike contingent actions, which presumably led the children to experience the uncanny valley effect.

Technologies have been developed for the perception, generation, and synchrony of rhythmic behavior that enable robots to dance with children. Keepon is a small robot that is designed to promote comfort and understanding in children, particularly those who are suffering with developmental orders such as autism. The eyes of Keepon are cameras and nose is a microphone and four motors in its base provides four degrees of freedom in its motion and each of the degrees of freedom has various parameters that determine its movement. The dancing robot stimulated a wide variety of play modes and the robot's dancing can be synchronized either to the movements of an accelerometer-instrumented toy or to prepare children's song. The design of robots interacting with human through natural social behavior focuses on verbal communication or emotional facial expression.

A technological method has been developed for intermodal mapping to generate robot motion from various sounds as well as to generate sounds from motions. The procedure consists of two phases, first the learning phase in which it observes some events together with associated sounds and then memorizes those sounds along with the motions of the sound source. Second phase is the interacting phase in which the robot receives limited sensory information from a single modality as input and associates this with different modality and expresses it. The recurrent-neural-network model with parametric bias (RNNPB) is applied that uses the current state-vector as input for outputting the next state-vector. The RNNPB model can self-organize the values that encode the input dynamics into special parametric-bias modes to reproduce he multimodal sensory flow.

The children showed not only individual actions, such as approach to, exploration of, and interaction with the robot, but also collective social actions, where the children spontaneously and actively situate the robot in their circle of, for example, playing house. We assume that the robot's simple appearance and comprehensive behavior derived (1) caretaking behavior from the children and (2) exchanging of such behavior among children, both of which would be important in the development of interpersonal communication and in pedagogical interventions to it.

This paper reports our longitudinal observation of unconstrained child-robot interaction at a daycare center for autistic children. We used a simple robot, Keepon, that is only capable of expressing its attention (directing its gaze) and emotions (pleasure and excitement). While controlled by a remote experimenter, Keepon interacted with the children with its simple appearance and actions. With a sense of curiosity and security, the children spontaneously approached Keepon and engaged in dyadic interaction with it, which then extended to triadic interactions where they exchanged with adult caregivers pleasure and surprise found in Keepon. The three-year-long observation suggests that autistic children possess the motivation to share mental states with others, which is contrary to the commonly held position that the motivation is impaired in autism. Autistic children, however, have difficulty rather in sifting out socially meaningful information (e.g., attention and emotions) from flooding perceptual information. Keepon, with its minimal expressiveness, directly conveyed socially meaningful information to the children, which activated their intact motivation to share interests and feelings with others. We conclude that social filtering is one of the prerequisites for interpersonal communication and that robots like Keepon can facilitate social filtering and its development in autistic children.

We are currently investigating the use of rhythm and synchrony in human-robot interaction. Specifically, we are developing techniques for the perception and generation of social rhythmic behaviors in nonverbal dance-oriented play between children and a small creature-like robot. While our goal is to develop and evaluate technological artifacts that can participate in rhythmically coordinated social interactions, it is first necessary to develop and evaluate appropriate methodologies for the evaluation of such technology. In this paper we present our experience in developing and revising an experimental paradigm for the evaluation of dance-oriented play with a robot. We propose that strictly controlled experimental paradigms for even such constrained interactions preclude the full expression (and therefore observation) of interactive behaviors that can be considered sufficiently rich and natural for the study of the complex yet fundamental rhythmic properties of social interaction.

This paper describes a robotic system that uses dance as a form of social interaction to explore the properties and importance of rhythmic movement in general social interaction. The system consists of a small creature-like robot whose movement is controlled by a rhythm-based software system. Environmental rhythms can be extracted from auditory or visual sensory stimuli, and the robot synchronizes its movement to a dominant rhythm. The system was demonstrated, and an exploratory study conducted, with children interacting with the robot in a generalized dance task. Through a behavioral analysis of videotaped interactions, we found that the robot's synchronization with the background music had an effect on children's interactive involvement with the robot. Furthermore, we observed a number of expected and unexpected styles and modalities of interactive exploration and play that inform our discussion on the next steps in the design of a socially rhythmic robotic system. This paper describes our research project that explores possible use of interactive robots in communication-care for children, especially those with special needs. For this purpose, we built Keepon, which is a small creature-like robot, and observed how autistic and typically-developing children (24 years old) interacted with it. Keepon was placed in their playrooms just as one of their toys, and tele-controlled by a human operator in a remote room; the children naturally and spontaneously showed various communicative actions to Keepon. From the longitudinal observations for more than two years (over 100 sessions of 3 hours) in a remedial institute and a preschool, we found that Keepon's comprehensive appearance and predictable responses gave the children a playful and relaxed mood, in which they spontaneously engaged in dyadic interaction with Keepon, and also that the typically-developing children and some of the autistic children extended the interaction into triadic one, where Keepon worked as the pivot of interpersonal play with their caregivers. Each child showed a different style and a different unfolding of interaction over time, which tell us a "story" of his or her personality and developmental profile, which is informative for the caregiver and the nursing staff to understand the child better, and is now being utilized for improving the remedial and educational services.

The paper proposes possible use of interactive robots in the remedial practice for children with autism, who have difficulties mainly in interpersonal communication. For this purpose, we built a small creature-like robot, Keepon, which was carefully designed to get autistic and non-autistic children involved in playful interaction. We observed how autistic children (2-4 years old) interacted with Keepon without any experimental setting or instructions in a playroom at a day-care center for children with special needs. From the longitudinal observation for a year and a half (totally, over 500 child-sessions), we found that Keepon's simple appearance and predictable responses gave the autistic children a playful and relaxed mood, in which they spontaneously engaged in dyadic play with Keepon, which would then expand into interpersonal communication where Keepon worked as the pivot of triadic play with adults or other children. Each child showed a different style and a different unfolding of interaction over time, which tell us a "story" of his or her personality and developmental profile, which would not be explained thoroughly by a diagnostic label like "autism". © 2005 IEEE.

This paper proposes "attention coupling", that is spatio-temporal coordination of each other's attention, as a prerequisite for human-robot social interaction, where the human interactant attributes mental states to the robot, and possibly vice versa. As a realization of attention coupling we implemented on our robots the capability of eye-contact (mutually looking into each other's eyes) and joint attention (looking at a shared target together). Observation of the interaction with human babies/children showed that the robots with the attention coupling capability facilitated in the babies/children social behavior, including showing, giving, and verbal interactions like asking questions. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper describes a quantitative indicator for segmenting narrative text into coherent scenes. The indicator, called the lexical cohension profile (LCP), records lexical cohesiveness of words in a fixed-length window moving word by word on the text. The cohesiveness of words, which represents their coherence, is computed by spreading activation on a semantic network The basic idea of LCP is: (1) if the window is inside a scene, the words in it tend to be cohesive, and (2) if the window is crossing a scene boundary, the words in it tend to be incohesive. Comparison with the scene boundaries marked by a number of subjects shows that hills and valleys of the graph of LCP closely correlates with the human judgements. LCP may provide valuable information for text analysis, especially for resolving anaphora and ellipsis. © 1994 Oxford University Press.
