    Phase equilibria in the Mn-Zn binary system were experimentally determined by chemical composition examination, crystal structure determination, and thermal analysis. Major changes were detected for the β, ε, and δ phases. The β-B2 single-phase region could not be confirmed in the studied system because a disordered body-centered cubic structure, which is identical to the δMn phase, was confirmed in a quenched sample from the previously proposed region of β phase. The ε phase has been controversial whether the phase is separated into ε, ε1, and ε2 phases or not. By studying a diffusion couple and several alloy compositions, it was established that the ε, ε1, and ε2 phases are not separate and comprise a single ε phase. Furthermore, the δ phase is not present in the Zn-rich region of the system because the corresponding invariant reactions were not detected via thermal analysis.

    Abstract Crystalline metals can have large theoretical elastic strain limits. However, a macroscopic block of conventional crystalline metals practically suffers a very limited elastic deformation of <0.5% with a linear stress–strain relationship obeying Hooke’s law. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a large tensile elastic deformation with an elastic strain of >4.3% in a Cu-based single crystalline alloy at its bulk scale at room temperature. The large macroscopic elastic strain that originates from the reversible lattice strain of a single phase is demonstrated by in situ microstructure and neutron diffraction observations. Furthermore, the elastic reversible deformation, which is nonhysteretic and quasilinear, is associated with a pronounced elastic softening phenomenon. The increase in the stress gives rise to a reduced Young’s modulus, unlike the traditional Hooke’s law behaviour. The experimental discovery of a non-Hookean large elastic deformation offers the potential for the development of bulk crystalline metals as high-performance mechanical springs or for new applications via “elastic strain engineering.”

    We have developed a long-distance polarizing microscope system combined with a solenoid-type superconducting magnet. By inserting an infinity-corrected objective lens into the magnet, direct or polarizing microscope images are observed in magnetic fields of up to 12 T at various temperatures down to 2 K. Through magneto-optical measurements in the transmission geometry, the local magnetization process of a transparent magnet is evaluated in areas of 10 × 10 µm<sup>2</sup>. This system enables simultaneous measurements of other physical properties over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. The basic principle of the proposed long-distance microscopy can be applied to imaging experiments in various research fields, particularly biology and chemistry.

    The demand for biomaterials has been increasing along with the increase in the population of elderly people worldwide. The mechanical properties and high wear resistance of metallic biomaterials make them well-suited for use as substitutes or as support for damaged hard tissues. However, unless these biomaterials also have a low Young's modulus similar to that of human bones, bone atrophy inevitably occurs. Because a low Young's modulus is typically associated with poor wear resistance, it is difficult to realize a low Young's modulus and high wear resistance simultaneously. Also, the superelastic property of shape-memory alloys makes them suitable for biomedical applications, like vascular stents and guide wires. However, due to the low recoverable strain of conventional biocompatible shape-memory alloys, the demand for a new alloy system is high. The novel body-centered-cubic cobalt-chromium-based alloys in this work provide a solution to both of these problems. The Young's modulus of <001>-oriented single-crystal cobalt-chromium-based alloys is 10-30 GPa, which is similar to that of human bone, and they also demonstrate high wear and corrosion resistance. They also exhibit superelasticity with a huge recoverable strain up to 17.0%. For these reasons, the novel cobalt-chromium-based alloys can be promising candidates for biomedical applications.

  10. Melting Point of Pure Cr and Phase Equilibria in the Cr-Si Binary System

    The melting point of pure Cr and phase equilibria in the Cr-Si binary system were determined by thermal analysis using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and differential thermal analyzer (DTA). In addition, the composition of two-phase alloys was analyzed using an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). Heat treatment above 1500 degrees C was conducted in a high-frequency induction heating furnace, where the temperature was estimated by a two-color pyrometer with an accuracy of +/- 20 degrees C. The melting point of pure Cr was determined to be 1861 +/- 3 degrees C, considering the O and N impurities. The phase diagram of the Cr-Si system was determined in the whole composition range. The invariant reaction related to the formation of Cr3Si and Cr5Si3 phases was confirmed as the eutectic reaction of liquid <-> Cr3Si + Cr5Si3. The solubility range of Cr3Si phase is on the Cr-rich side from the stoichiometric composition, whereas the solubility range of Cr5Si3 phase extends toward the Si-rich side. We found using the x-ray diffraction that the alpha-Cr5Si3/beta-Cr5Si3 transformation does not exist.

    Procedure of determination of magnetic part of the specific heat of ferromagnetic (FM) solid from the results of the low-temperature measurements is proposed and applied to the number of non-stoichiometric Ni50Mn50-xInx alloys. It is shown that the disregard of magnetic contribution to the specific heat of FM solid results in the noticeable underestimation of Debye temperature and overestimation of the specific heat of electron subsystem of FM solid. The magnetic contribution to the low-temperature specific heat of antiferromagnetic (AFM) solid is negligibly small if Néel temperature exceeds the Debye temperature. In the opposite case the magnetic part of the specific heat of AFM solid may be comparable in value with non-magnetic part, but separation of these parts is an open problem.

    This study experimentally investigates a series of phase transitions of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys, Ni2+xMnGa1−x, in the composition range 0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.27. An experimental phase diagram of these alloys was constructed by the use of electrical resistivity, thermomagnetization, and thermoanalysis measurements, and compared with both the Ni-rich Ni2+xMn1−xGa and Mn-rich Ni2Mn1+yGa1−y alloy systems which have been extensively studied as proto-materials for ferromagnetic Heusler alloys. The comparison makes it clear that there are remarkable composition dependencies for the following characteristic temperatures. All three systems have the common property that Curie temperature decreases and martensitic transition temperature increases with increasing x till the both temperatures coincide each other. As for the magnetostructural coupling temperature, however, the Ni-rich system has a wide temperature range, and the Mn-rich system does not show signs of the magnetostructural coupling, whereas the magnetostructural coupling was observed in Ni2+xMnGa1−x alloys in the range 0.10 ≤ x ≤ 0.12 which has similar characteristics between the former two systems. The premartensitic transition temperature was also observed in Ni2+xMnGa1−x alloys; it reached the ambient temperature at x = ~0.04, the highest of the three alloy systems. In addition, an intermartensitic transition appeared in Ni2+xMnGa1−x alloys in the composition range 0.06 ≤ x ≤ 0.10, which showed a drastic change especially in the electrical resistivity. These characteristic temperatures are also compared in terms of the number of valence electrons among the Ni–Mn–Ga Heusler alloy systems, and the differences are clarified and discussed in detail.

    This study investigates the crystal structure, martensitic transformation behavior, magnetic properties, and magnetic-field-induced reverse martensitic transformation of Co64V15(Si21–xAlx) alloys. It was found that by increasing the Al composition, the microstructure changes from the martensite phase to the parent phase. The crystal structures of the martensite and parent phases were determined as D022 and L21, respectively. Thermoanalysis and thermomagnetization measurements were used to determine the martensitic transformation and Curie temperatures. Both the ferromagnetic state of the parent phase and that of the martensite phase were observed. With the increasing Al contents, the martensitic transformation temperatures decrease, whereas the Curie temperatures of both the martensite and parent phases increase. The spontaneous magnetization and its composition dependence were also determined. The magnetic-field-induced reverse martensitic transformation of a Co64V15Si7Al14 alloy under pulsed high magnetic fields was observed. Moreover, using the results of the DSC measurements and the pulsed high magnetization measurements, the temperature dependence of the transformation entropy change of the Co-V-Si-Al alloys was estimated.

    Vapor compression technologies widely used for refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning have consumed a large fraction of global energy. Efforts have been made to improve the efficiency to save the energy, and to search for new refrigerants to take the place of the ones with high global warming potentials. The solid-state refrigeration using caloric materials are regarded as high-efficiency and environmentally friendly technologies. Among them, the elastocaloric refrigeration using shape memory alloys has been evaluated as the most promising one due to its low device cost and less of a demand for an ambient environment. General caloric materials heat up and cool down when external fields are applied and removed adiabatically (conventional caloric effect), while a few materials show opposite temperature changes (inverse caloric effect). Previously reported shape memory alloys have been found to show either a conventional or an inverse elastocaloric effect by the latent heat during uniaxial-stress-induced martensitic transformation. In this paper, we report a self-regulating functional material whose behavior exhibits an elastocaloric switching effect in Co-Cr-Al-Si Heusler-type shape memory alloys. For a fixed alloy composition, these alloys can change from conventional to inverse elastocaloric effects because of the change in ambient temperature. This unique behavior is caused by the sign reversal of latent heat from conventional to the re-entrant martensitic transformation. The realization of the elastocaloric switching effect can open new possibilities of system design for solid-state refrigeration and temperature sensors.

    Shape memory alloys recover their original shape after deformation, making them useful for a variety of specialized applications. Superelastic behavior begins at the critical stress, which tends to increase with increasing temperature for metal shape memory alloys. Temperature dependence is a common feature that often restricts the use of metal shape memory alloys in applications. We discovered an iron-based superelastic alloy system in which the critical stress can be optimized. Our Fe-Mn-Al- Cr-Ni alloys have a controllable temperature dependence that goes from positive to negative, depending on the chromium content. This phenomenon includes a temperature-invariant stress dependence. This behavior is highly desirable for a range of outer space-based and other applications that involve large temperature fluctuations.

    Magnetic phase diagrams of the metamagnetic shape memory alloys Ni50-xCoxMn31.5Ga18.5 (x = 9 and 9.7) were produced from high-field magnetization measurements up to 56 T. For both compounds, magnetic field induced martensitic transformations are observed at various temperatures below 300 K. Hysteresis of the field-induced transformation shows unconventional temperature dependence: it decreases with decreasing temperature after showing a peak. Magnetic susceptibility measurement, microscopy, and X-ray diffraction data suggest a model incorporating the magnetic anisotropy and Zeeman energy in two variants, which qualitatively explains the thermal and the magnetic field history dependence of the hysteresis in these alloys.     © 2020 American Physical Society. Ferromagnetic exchange stiffness is a key to describe the robustness of a ferromagnetic interaction. Because the experimental determination of the exchange stiffness constant A continues to be elusive, especially at elevated temperatures, micromagnetic insights on the impact of thermal fluctuations on the ferromagnetic spin order have remained less tractable. In this study, the temperature dependence of A is experimentally determined for a Ni2Mn0.8In1.2 single crystal by measuring the 180 domain-wall width using off-axis electron holography and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The theoretically expected power-law scaling with magnetization for A is shown to be applicable only in the low-temperature region (approximately half of the Curie temperature), and A starts to follow the power law with a significantly larger scaling exponent in the higher-temperature region. The decremental trends in the domain-wall width and the exchange length at elevated temperature seem to be attributed to this temperature dependence of A.

    Heusler-type CoxCr78-xGa11Si11 alloys exhibit the reentrant martensitic transition, i.e., the forward martensitic transition from the paramagnetic austenite (Para-A) phase into the paramagnetic martensite (Para-M) phase and the successive reverse martensitic transition from the Para-M phase into the ferromagnetic austenite (FerroA) phase with decreasing temperature T. In the present paper, this complicated transition is analyzed by use of phenomenological free energy, which is expanded in powers of two order parameters, i.e., the tetragonal distortion e(3) and the magnetization M. It is assumed that an interference between e(3 )and M through the repulsive magnetostructural interaction, (Ge2M2)-M-3 (> 0), in the free energy is strong enough to suppress out the ferromagnetic martensite (Ferro-M) phase with both nonvanishing e(3) and M. With the presence of this repulsive interaction, the observed phase diagram in the T-x plane is found to be successfully explained. The T dependencies of e(3) and the entropy are also calculated to see the equilibrium state. The inverse magnetic susceptibility in the martensite phase chi(-1) is derived by taking into account that the term (Ge2M2)-M-3(> 0) opposes the magnetization by an external magnetic field in the martensite phase. The calculated chi(-1) exhibits a negative paramagnetic Curie temperature as was observed, which verifies directly the existence of (Ge2M2)-M-3 (> 0). An essential role of (Ge2M2)-M-3 (> 0) in the phase stabilities is also found in the calculated T dependence of the elastic constant (c(11) - c(12)). On the basis of the present analyses, the conditions for the appearance of the reentrant martensitic transition are described.

Abnormal grain growth induced by cyclic heat treatment for unidirectionally solidified Cu–Al–Mn shape memory alloys was investigated by electron backscatter diffraction. A Cu–17.5Al–11Mn (at%) alloy was initially fabricated by unidirectional solidification, showing [001] textures along the solidification direction with columnar grains and a high fraction of low-angle grain boundaries. Abnormal grain growth was then involved using cyclic heat treatment for the columnar polycrystal, during which the subgrains that formed because of precipitation served as a strong driving force. The migration of high-angle grain boundaries dominates the abnormal grain growth behavior, and no orientation deviation occurs during cyclic heat treatment so the large grains or single crystals maintain a [001] orientation. With repeated cyclic heat treatments, single-crystalline Cu–17.5Al–11Mn (at%) alloys showing [001] orientation with dimensions of 50 mm × 10 mm × 1 mm could be obtained, in which an excellent recoverable strain of more than 10% was observed.

    The magnetic and martensitic transformation properties of Ni50Mn25.2Fe2.8Ga22 ferromagnetic shape memory alloy were systematically investigated. The Curie temperature T-C and the martensitic transformation temperature T-M were determined. The temperature variations of the lattice parameters were measured by using an in situ X-ray powder diffractometer. This alloy crystallizes in cubic L2(1)-type structure for the parent phase and the martensitic transformation was observed to start at 294 K with a small volume change Delta V. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on T-C and T-M was investigated by measuring the temperature dependence of the initial permeability at various pressures up to 9.4 kbar. It was found that T-M increases with increasing pressure. By use of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, the values of dT(M)/dp and Delta V determined in this study were found to be consistent with the result of the entropy change AS, which was estimated by thermoanalysis. On the other hand, T-C was found to slightly decrease with increasing pressure, which is a unique behavior compared to other Ni(2)MnZ (Z = Ga, In, Sn, Sb) alloys. On the basis of the experimental results, the exchange mechanism of the Ni50Mn25.2Fe2.8Ga22 alloy is discussed. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The phase diagram, including the martensitic and magnetic transformations, was determined by thermoanalysis and thermomagnetization measurements in the CoxCr79-xAl10.5Si10.5 section of the Co-based Heusler shape memory alloy. Magnetization measurements under pulsed magnetic fields were conducted and magnetic field-induced reverse martensitic transformation was clearly observed at room temperature. A superelastic behavior was obtained in the Co55.7Cr23.3Al10.5Si10.5 alloy in the temperature range of 198 to 423 K. The critical stress for martensitic transformation was found to show a negative temperature dependence at temperatures lower than approximately 310 K due to the magnetic effect despite the normal temperature dependence at higher temperatures.

    The phase stabilities and ordering tendencies in the quaternary full-Heusler alloys NiCoMnAl and NiCoMnGa have been investigated by in situ neutron diffraction, calorimetry, and magnetization measurements. NiCoMnGa was found to adopt the L2(1) structure, with distinct Mn and Ga sublattices but a common Ni-Co sublattice. A second-order phase transition to the B2 phase with disorder also between Mn and Ga was observed at 1160 K. In contrast, in NiCoMnAl slow cooling or low-temperature annealing treatments are required to induce incipient L21 ordering, otherwise the system displays only B2 order. Linked to L2(1) ordering, a drastic increase in the magnetic transition temperature was observed in NiCoMnAl, while annealing affected the magnetic behavior of NiCoMnGa only weakly due to the low degree of quenched-in disorder. First principles calculations were employed to study the thermodynamics as well as order-dependent electronic properties of both compounds. It was found that a near half-metallic pseudogap emerges in the minority spin channel only for the completely ordered Y structure. However, this structure is energetically unstable compared to a tetragonal structure with alternating layers of Ni and Co, which is predicted to be the low-temperature ground state. The experimental inaccessibility of the totally ordered structures is explained by kinetic limitations due to the low ordering energies.

    Temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity have been measured on the Heusler alloy system Ni2MnGa1-xFex. The phase diagram of Ni2MnGa1-xFex was constructed on the basis of the experimental results. The structural and magnetic transition temperatures are consistent with those previously determined by magnetic measurements. The changes of the electrical resistivity at the martensitic transition temperature Delta rho, were studied as a function of Fe concentration x. The Delta rho abruptly increased in the concentration range between x = 0.15 and 0.20. The magnetostructural transitions were observed at x = 0.275, 0.30, and 0.35.

    Specific heat measurements were performed at low temperatures for Ni50Mn50-xInx alloys to determine their Debye temperatures (theta(D)) and electronic specific heat coefficients (gamma). For x &lt;= 15, where the ground state is the martensite (M) phase, theta(D) decreases linearly and gamma increases slightly with increasing In content. For x &gt;= 16.2, where the ground state is the ferromagnetic parent (P) phase, gamma increases with decreasing In content. Extrapolations of the composition dependences of theta(D) and gamma in both the phases suggest that these values change discontinuously during the martensitic phase transformation. The value of theta(D) in the M phase is larger than that in the P phase. The behavior is in accordance with the fact that the volume of the M phase is more compressive than that of the P phase. On the other hand, gamma is slightly larger in the P phase, in good agreement with the reported density of states around the Fermi energy obtained by the first-principle calculations.

    The columnar-grained Cu71.5Al17.5Mn11 shape memory alloy was treated by single-pass hot rolling at 900 degrees C with a thickness reduction of 67.3% followed by immediate water quenching. Dynamic recovery other than discontinuous dynamic recrystallization occurred during the treatment process, bringing about retained columnar grains with &lt;001&gt; textures, as well as dislocations introduced into the parent matrix. As a result, a large maximum recoverable strain of more than 11% was maintained due to the retained beneficial grain characteristics. The critical stress for inducing martensitic transformation and stress hysteresis were enhanced mainly due to the existence of dislocations.

    Effect of pressure on the Curie temperature T-C of the Mn-rich Heusler alloys Mn2RuSn and Mn2PdSn has been investigated by measuring the temperature dependence of initial permeability at various pressures up to 10 kbar. It was found that the Curie temperatures of Mn2RuSn and Mn2PdSn decrease with increasing pressure. The pressure derivatives of TC were estimated to be -0.59 K/kbar for Mn2RuSn and -0.80 K/kbar for Mn2PdSn. On the basis of the experimental results, the relationship between the magnetic transition temperature and the Mn-Mn distance is discussed.

    We report the martensitic transformation behavior in Co-V-Ga Heusler alloys. Thermoanalysis and thermomagnetization measurements were conducted to observe the martensitic transformation. By using a transmission electron microscope and an in situ X-ray diffractometer, martensitic transformation was found to occur from the L2(1) Heusler parent phase to the D0(22) martensite phase. Phase diagrams were determined for two pseudo-binary sections where martensitic transformation was detected. Magnetic properties, including the Curie temperatures and spontaneous magnetization of the parent phase, were also investigated. The magnetic properties showing behaviors different from those of NiMn-based alloys were found. Published by AIP Publishing.

    Co64V15Si21-xGax (x = 4, 6, 8, 10) alloys have been prepared to investigate the alloying effects of Ga on various properties of Co-V-Si high-temperature shape memory alloys, including crystal structure, transformation behavior, thermal cycle stability, microstructure evolution, mechanical property and shape memory behavior. Results show that the D0(22)-type martensite single-phase is transformed from the L2(1)-type parent phase in Co64V15Si17Ga4 alloys. With the increase of Ga content, R phase appears along grain boundaries of martensite and martensitic transformation temperatures decrease rapidly. Furthermore, the Co64V15Si17Ga4 alloy exhibits excellent thermal cycle stability and stable microstructure even after heated to high temperatures of similar to 800 degrees C repeatedly. On the other hand, for the (martensite + R) dual-phase alloys (Le., Co64V15Si15Ga6, Co64V15Si13Ga8 and Co64V15Si11Ga10), (epsilon Co) phase precipitates during thermal cycle process, with respective thermal cycle stabilities enhanced at different temperatures simultaneously. In addition, although excess Ga addition deteriorates the mechanical property significantly, it is still concluded that the doping of Ga has a positive effect on the development of shape memory effect of Co-V-Si high-temperature shape memory alloys.     The atomic arrangement and microsegregation in the vicinity of thermally induced antiphase boundaries in a Ni50Mn20In30 Heusler alloy are investigated through multislice simulations, high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), X-ray diffraction pattern Rietveld analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and modified Bragg Williams Gorsky calculations. Intensity analysis of atomic-resolution HAADF-STEM images revealed that a 180 degrees geometrical phase shift occurred across the antiphase boundaries, accompanied by a decay in the degree of atomic order and an enrichment of In. Energy-dispersive (X-ray) spectroscopy analysis revealed an In enrichment as high as 2.7 at.% at the center of the antiphase boundaries, comparable to that (1.0-1.8 at.%) suggested by the parallel tangent law for the Gibbs energy curves of the L2(1) and B2 phases using the modified Bragg Williams-Gorsky calculation. This suggests that microsegregation occurs at the antiphase boundaries and can be understood basically within the framework of the local thermodynamic equilibrium. (C) 2016 Acta Materialia Inc.     The elastocaloric effect in a columnar-grained Cu71.5Al17.5Mn11 shape memory alloy fabricated by directional solidification was investigated. A large entropy change of 25.0 J/kg K generated by the reversible martensitic transformation was demonstrated. The adiabatic temperature change of 12-13 K was directly measured, covering a wide temperature range of more than 100 K. The low applied stress with a specific elastocaloric ability of 100.8 K/GPa was identified and the potentially attainable operational temperature window as wide as more than 215 K was also discussed. The outstanding elastocaloric refrigeration capability, together with the low applying stress and uniform phase transformation, makes the columnar-grained Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy a promising material for solid-state refrigeration.     Martensitic transformation in off-stoichiometric Co2VSi Heusler alloy was firstly confirmed in this work. The martensite phase presents an ordered 2M non-modulate D0(22) structure transformed from L2(1) Heusler structure. In the Co63.5V17.0Si19.5 alloy, the forward and reverse martensitic transformation temperatures are extremely high which reach up to 683 degrees C and 693 degrees C, respectively, higher than most known Heusler-type high-temperature shape memory alloys. And results also indicate that the single martensite phase alloy exhibits a good ductility and strength with the compressive strain of over 15% and strength of about 2300 MPa, respectively. What's more, the recoverable strain being maximal to around 3.1% can be obtained at high temperature (750-800 degrees C) due to its reverse martensitic transformation. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.     In the present study, Ni content dependence of martensitic transformation behavior in Ti50-xNi40+xCu10 alloys (x = 0.0-3.0) was investigated, and then the superelastic behavior of a x = 2.4 alloy was examined at low temperatures. The Ti50-xNi40+xCu10 alloys are in B2 single-phase up to x= 2.4 at 1373K. The B2/B19 and B19/B19' transformation temperatures decrease with increasing x and the lowest martensitic transformation starting temperature of 125 K was detected. In the alloys with Ni compositions over x = 1.4, a pre-martensitic "intermediate" phase was detected by thermoanalysis measurements. While the middle eigenvalue lambda(2) is close to 1.0, which was found to be independent of the Ni content, the thermal hysteresis, T-hys increases with increasing Ni content. This is explained by the drastic decrease in transformation entropy change. Although starting to drastically increase at temperatures below 100 K, the temperature dependence of stress hysteresis in compression testing is basically smaller than that in Ti48.2Ni51.8 binary alloy.

    New Mn(2)PdZ (Z=In, Sn) alloys have been synthesized. Both alloys crystallize in a Heusler-type cubic structure. The lattice parameters of solution-treated Mn2PdSn and Mn2PdIn were found to be 6.351 angstrom and 6.399 angstrom, respectively. Magnetization measurements were carried out under magnetic fields up to 68 kOe. Both the solution-treated alloys have spontaneous magnetizations. The magnetic moment at 6 K and the Curie temperature of solution-treated Mn2PdSn were estimated to be 1.70 mu(B)/f. u. and 411 K, respectively. The magnetic moment at 6 K of solution-treated Mn2PdIn was found to be 0.59 mu(B)/f. u.. Ageing heat treatments at 673 K on these alloy, instead of an increase of degree of atomic order, resulted in phase decomposition. Thin-plate precipitates and a very fine Widmanstatten morphology were found for the aged Mn2PdSn and Mn2PdIn alloys, respectively. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Structural glasses are characterized by the loss of long-range translational and rotational symmetry. In the last two decades, however, it has been discovered that materials that exhibit ferroic (ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and ferroelastic) phase transformations may also exhibit glassy behavior, in which the ferroic degrees of freedom (magnetization, polarization, strain) exhibit a loss of long-range translational symmetry. A consequence of this loss of long-range symmetry is the suppression of the ferroic phase transitions. Moreover, these unique glassy systems exhibit dynamic and thermodynamic behavior analogous to regular structural glasses. Conventionally, the onset of glassy behavior is brought about by the introduction of spatial heterogeneities, typically originating from point defects, particularly in the case of strain glasses. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, that configurational order! disorder in a single ferromagnetic alloy (Ni45Co5Mn36.6In13.4) can be used to stabilize both strain and magnetic glasses. The control of the degree of configurational order through simple heat treatment schedules, and simultaneous application of stress and magnetic field enabled us to observe a Kauzmann point, that is, the collapse of the entropy difference between a crystalline and a glassy phase. Systematic investigation of the transformation behavior in this system as a function of heat treatment enabled us to observe four kinds of solid solid phase transitions (ferromagnetic paramagnetic, martensitic transformation, strain and magnetic glass) in a single composition.     In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and compression tests were performed on Co2Cr(Ga,Si) shape memory alloys. The reentrant martensitic transformation behavior was directly observed during the in situ XRD measurements. The high-temperature parent phase and low-temperature reentrant parent phase were found to have a continuous temperature dependence of lattice parameter, therefore suggesting that they are the same phase in nature. Moreover, compression tests were performed on a parent-phase single crystal sample; an evolution from normal to inverse temperature dependence of critical stress for martensitic transformation was directly observed. Based on the Clausius-Clapeyron analysis, a sign reversal of entropy change can be expected on the same alloy. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

    In the present study, Ni content dependence of martensitic transformation (MT) temperatures in Ti50-XNi40+XCu10.0 alloys (X = 0.0-3.0) was investigated in order to reveal the MT behavior at low temperatures. The Ti-Ni-Cu alloys are in B-2 single-phase up to 42.4 at% Ni at 1363 K. B2/B19 or B19/B19' MT temperatures decrease with increasing Ni and a lowest temperature of 124 K was detected. In the alloys with Ni compositions over 41.2 at%, pre-martensitic "intermediate" phase was detected by specific heat measurement. While the middle eigenvalue lambda(2) are close to 1.0, which were found independent of the Ni content, the thermal hysteresis, Delta T-hys increases with increasing Ni content, which is explained by drastic decrease in transformation entropy change.

    Martensitic transformation behaviors and magnetic properties in off-stoichiometric Co2Cr(AlSi) Heusler alloys were investigated mainly by TEM, DSC, SQUID and mechanical test. In Co57Cr21Al11Si11 alloy, martensitic transformation from Heusler-type L2(1) to D0(22) phase was confirmed, where M-s and A(f) temperatures were 429 and 452 K, respectively, suggesting thermoelastic martensitic transformation because of the small transformation temperature hysteresis. In polycrystalline Co57Cr25Al10Si10 alloy with large grains, superelasticity with a recovery strain of over 2% was detected by compression test at 298 K. Thus, a novel Co-based shape memory alloy was discovered in the Co-Cr-Al-Si system. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The effect of pressure on the Curie temperature T-C and the martensitic transition temperature T-M of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni50+x,(Mn0.5Fe0.5)(25)Ga25+x has been investigated by measuring the temperature dependence of the initial permeability at various pressures up to similar to 10 kbar. The pressure derivatives of T-C and T-M, dT(C)/dp and dT(M)/dp, of Ni-50(Mn0.5Fe0.5)(25)Ga-25 (x=0) are found to be 0.23 K/kbar and 0.77 K/kbar, respectively, The values of dTC/dp and dTM/dp of Niso,(Mn-0.5.Fe-0.5)(25)Ga25+x alloys decrease with increasing x. Moreover the sign of dTc/dp changes from positive to negative with increasing x. The pressure dependence or T-C for Ni50+x(Mn0.5Fe0.5)(25)Ga25-x alloys is discussed qualitatively based On the dependence of the exchange interactions on interatomic distance. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.     The martensitic transformation characteristics and coherency of ordered gamma' precipitates are investigated by electrical resistivity tests and HAADF-STEM observation in the aged FeNiCoAlTaB alloys. The results reveal that the precipitate grows up in the Ostwald ripening mode at the initial aging stage. As aging time increasing, the coarsening behavior of precipitates deviates from the Ostwald ripening and the martensitic transformation changes from the thermoelastic type to the non-thermoelastic one. The thermoelastic to non-thermoelastic transition with increasing precipitates size results from coherency loss between precipitates and matrix during martensitic transformation.     Electronic, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of Co2Cr(Ga,Si)-based shape-memory alloys, which exhibit reentrant martensitic transformation (RMT) behavior, were studied experimentally. For electric resistivity (ER), an inverse (semiconductor-like) temperature dependence in the parent phase was found, along with anomalous behavior below its Curie temperature. A pseudobinary phase diagram was determined, which gives a "martensite loop" clearly showing the reentrant behavior. Differential scanning calorimetry and specific-heat measurements were used to derive the entropy change Delta S between martensite and parent phases. The temperature dependence of the derived Delta S was analyzed thermodynamically to confirm the appearances of both the RMT and normal martensitic transformation. Detailed studies on the specific heat in martensite and parent phases at low temperatures were also conducted.

    The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity rho of Ni2Mn1-xCrxGa (x=0.05 similar to 0.25) was measured. Two anomalies corresponding to the magnetic and structural phase transitions at T-C and T-M were observed on the rho-T curves for each sample, respectively. The kinks corresponding to the premartensitic transition at T-p were observed for all samples except x=0.25. On the basis of the experimental results, the T vs. x phase diagram of Ni2Mn1-xCrxGa was determined.

    In order to investigate behavior of magnetic field-induced reverse martensitic transformation for Ni-Co-Mn-Sb, magnetization experiments up to a static magnetic field of 18 T and a pulsed magnetic field of 40 T were carried out. In the thermomagnetization curves for Ni41Co9Mn39Sb11 alloy, the equilibrium transformation temperature T-0 was observed to decrease with increasing applied magnetic field, H-0, at a rate of dT(0)/d(0)H = 4.6 K/T. The estimated value of entropy change evaluated from the Clausius-Clapeyron relation was about 14.1 J/(Kkg), which was in good agreement with the value obtained by differential scanning calorimetric measurements. For the isothermal magnetization curves, metamagnetic behavior associated with the magnetic field-induced martensitic transformation was observed. The equilibrium magnetic field, H-0(0) = (H-0(Af) + H-0(Ms))/2, of the martensitic transformation tended to be saturated at lower temperature; that is, transformation arrest phenomenon was confirmed for the Ni-Co-Mn-Sb system, analogous with the Ni(Co)-Mn-Z (Z = In, Sn, Ga, Al) alloys. Temperature dependence of the magnetic field hysteresis, H-0(hys) = H-0(Af) - H-0(Ms), was analyzed based on the model for the plastic deformation introduced by the dislocations. The behavior can be explained by the model and the difference of the sweeping rate of the applied magnetic field was well reflected by the experimental results.

    To clarify the electronic, lattice, and magnetic contribution to the inverse magnetocaloric effect (IMCE) in the metamagnetic shape-memory alloy Ni45Co5Mn50-xInx, magnetization, magnetocaloric effect, and specific-heat measurements were carried out in a wide range of fields and temperatures. The IMCEs of Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 were directly measured as adiabatic temperature changes in pulsed fields of up to 15 T. A maximum temperature decrease of -12.8 K was observed. The low-temperature specific heats in both the austenitic and the martensitic phases of Ni45Co5Mn36.5In13.5 were measured by using steady fields. Through analyses of the data, the entropy changes in charge (1.2 J/kg K), spin (-29 J/kg K), and lattice (51 J/kg K) sectors were individually evaluated. The result demonstrates the dominant role of the lattice sector in inverse MCEs in this material.

    Specific heat was systematically measured for Ni50Mn50-xGax ferromagnetic shape memory alloys near the martensitic transformation temperatures. Martensitic and intermediate transformations and magnetic transitions in the parent and martensite phases were directly observed via specific heat measurements. Entropy change during the intermediate transformation was successfully estimated by direct measurement. Entropy change during the martensitic transformation was also analyzed; it generally decreases with decreasing Ga concentration. Anomalous behavior of the entropy change during martensitic transformation was observed near the magnetic transitions, and was found to attributable to the magnetic contribution by a qualitative examination based on the results of specific heat measurements.     Permeability and differential scanning calorimetry measurements were carried out on Ni2MnGa1-xFex (0 &lt;= x &lt;= 0: 40). On the basis of the experimental results, the phase diagram in the temperature-concentration plane was determined. The characteristics of the determined phase diagram are similar to those of the phase diagrams of Ni2+xMn1-xGa, Ni2Mn1-xCuxGa and Ni2MnGa1-xCux systems, where the magneto-structural transition between the paramagnetic austenite phase (Para-A) and ferromagnetic martensite phase (Ferro-M) occurs. Furthermore, the concentration dependence of the magnetic moment per formula unit, mu(s), at 5 K for Ni2MnGa1-xFex (0 &lt;= x &lt;= 0.375) is also reported. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V.     Specific heat was systematically measured by the heat flow method in Ni50-xCoxMn50-yAly metamagnetic shape memory alloys near the martensitic transformation temperatures. Martensitic transformation and ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition for the parent phase were directly observed via the specific heat measurements. On the basis of the experimental results, the entropy change was estimated and it was found to show an abrupt decrease below the Curie temperature. The results were found to be consistent with those of earlier studies on Ni-Co-Mn-Al alloys.

    The phase diagram, magnetic properties and the region over which the Heusler alloys Co2Cr(Ga1 xSix) occur as a single phase have been established. A single phase was obtained in the composition range of x &lt;= 0.5, in which the order-disorder phase transition temperature from the L2(1) to the B2 phase, T-t(L21/B2), increased almost linearly with increasing x. The value of T-t(L21/B2) for the L2(1)-type Co2CrSi Heusler alloy, estimated by linear extrapolation from its concentration dependence, was about 1450 K, and therefore higher than that of Co2CrAl and Co2CrGa. The Curie temperature, T-C, also increased with increasing x becoming 600 K at x = 0.5, thus reflecting an increase in the magnetic moment caused by the change in the number of the valence electrons. The concentration dependence of the spontaneous magnetic moment, M-s, measured at 5 K increased with increasing x, almost following the generalized Slater-Pauling (S.     The martensitic transformation behavior in a Ni45Co5Mn36In14 was investigated at low temperatures. Almost perfect superelasticity was confirmed below 200 K. The reverse transformation finishing stress monotonically decreased with decreasing temperature and the forward transformation starting stress changed from a decrease to an increase at similar to 125K. The temperature dependence of equilibrium stress had the same tendency as that of equilibrium magnetic field, allowing the thermal transformation arrest temperature to be determined. The temperature dependence of hysteresis in stress-induced transformation was also similar to that in magnetic-field-induced transformation, and the levels of dissipation energy yielded by the stress and magnetic field were intrinsically equivalent.     As novel tools to study magnetic shape memory alloys, a high-speed optical microscope system and a measurement system of magnetocaloric effects (MCEs) in pulsed magnetic fields are developed. Using the high-speed imaging system, successive changes in the surface morphology are visualized in the process of magnetic field-induced reverse martensitic transformation in Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3. The MCEs of Gd studied in pulsed fields show reasonable agreement with the earlier results obtained in steady fields. Application of high magnetic fields up to 55T realizes a gigantic adiabatic heating of 63 K.(C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    We present the magnetic properties and the magnetic phase diagram of Ni50Mn50-xGax ferromagnetic shape memory alloys across a wide concentration range. Martensitic transformation, intermediate transformation, B2 L21 order disorder transformation, Neel and Curie temperatures are determined for the prepared samples. The martensitic transformation temperature decreases with increasing Ga concentration and bends two times when crossing the Curie temperature and the intermediate-phase transformation temperature. Spontaneous magnetization and its composition dependence were also investigated. Composition dependence of the transformation temperatures and the spontaneous magnetization in the martensite phase of NNi50Mn50-xGax are compared with those of Ni50Mn50-xGaxIn, and Ni50Mn50-xGax, revealing a similarity in the NiMn-based alloy systems.     Normally, shape memory effect (SME) is obtained by the reverse martensitic transformation, therefore only induced by heating a sample from the deformed martensite phase. In this study, we report a phenomenon of cooling-induced SME, observed in a Co2Cr(Ga,Si) Heusler alloy, where the normal heating-induced SME can be obtained at the same time. The cooling-induced SME is attributed to an abnormal martensitic transformation in Co2Cr(Ga,Si) Heusler alloy. Moreover, an inverse temperature dependence of superelastic stress was also observed. The discoveries of these phenomena provide application possibilities for shape memory alloys, especially at low temperatures. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

    Magnetic field-induced transition of Ni45Co5Mn 36.7In13.3 was investigated under magnetic fields with different sweeping rates. A static magnetic field produced by a superconducting magnet, a semi-static magnetic field created by a flywheel DC generator-powered magnet, and a pulsed magnetic field resulting from a condenser bank-powered magnet were used in this study, which covers sweeping rates of more than 6 orders. The magnetic field hysteresis is enlarged with increasing sweeping rate. The experimental results were consistent with a phenomenological model, and the activation energy for the thermally activated process was determined to be 0.7 eV for this alloy. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

    In this report, we present findings of systematic research on NiCoMnAl alloys, with the purpose of acquiring a higher thermal transformation arrest temperature (T-A). By systematic research, T-A in the NiCoMnAl alloy systems was raised up to 190 K, compared to the highest T-A of 130 K in NiCoMnIn. For a selected alloy of Ni40Co10Mn33Al17, magnetization measurements were performed under a pulsed high magnetic field, and the critical magnetic field-temperature phase diagram was determined. The magnetic phase diagram for Ni50-xCoxMn50-yAly was also established. Moreover, from the discussion that the formerly called "kinetic arrest phenomenon" has both thermodynamic and kinetic factors, we suggest a terminology change to the "thermal transformation arrest phenomenon".

    Magnetotransport properties of an Fe48Mn24Ga 28 Heusler-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloy are tracked in a temperature interval that covers both martensitic and austenitic phases. A large temperature hysteresis indicative of a coupled magnetostructural transition from ferromagnetic martensite to paramagnetic austenite is observed on the temperature dependencies of magnetization and electrical resistivity. The temperature dependency of the anomalous Hall-effect coefficient in Fe 48Mn24Ga28 cannot be described in terms of skew scattering, side-jump, and intrinsic mechanisms of the anomalous Hall-effect theory. The Hall-effect resistivity in the martensitic state is smaller, but is of the same order of magnitude as in the case of the giant Hall effect in a half-metallic Co2MnAl. Specific features of the temperature dependencies of magnetization, resistivity, magnetoresistance, and ordinary and anomalous Hall-effect coefficients are discussed and the possible routes for increasing Hall-effect resistivity are suggested. © 2013 American Physical Society.

    Temperature dependence of the equilibrium transformation field (H 0) for Ni50Mn34.4In15.6 metamagnetic shape memory alloy was precisely determined by electrical resistivity measurements using a pulsed magnet. The H0-T curve was found to exhibit a maximum at around 50 K, suggesting that the transformation entropy change becomes negative in the lower temperature region. The residual electrical resistivity in the field-induced parent phase at lower temperatures was about 10 × 10-8 Ω·m, being normal value as the ferromagnetic alloys, whereas that in the martensite phase was high of about 200 × 10-8 Ω·m. The temperature dependence of the magnetic field hysteresis can be well fitted with the Seeger's theory proposed for plastic deformation by dislocations. © 2013 The Japan Institute of Metals.

    In situ microscopic study was carried out on Ni44.3Co5.1Mn31.4Al19.2 metamagnetic shape memory alloy under a pulsed magnetic field up to 35.5 T. Magnetic field-induced reverse martensitic transformation was directly observed. The critical magnetic fields were determined from the contrast change of the microstructure, where good agreement had been found by magnetization measurement in a previous study. Comparison of the micrographs during thermal and magnetic field cycles between Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 and Ni44.3Co5.1Mn31.4Al19.2 was conducted. It is concluded that though the energy barrier related to thermal activation strongly effects the martensitic transformation of Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3, its effect is very small on Ni44.3Co5.1Mn31.4Al19.2. Qualitative discussion yielded a reasonable understanding of the results of microstructure observation.

    Two representatives of Ni(Co)-Mn-Al metamagnetic shape memory alloy system, Ni45Co5Mn31Al19 and Ni35Co15Mn35Al15, have been studied with respect to their magnetocaloric properties. Experimental study of the magnetocaloric effect by a direct measurement of the adiabatic temperature change Delta T-ad revealed that in both the samples Delta T-ad depends on the measurement protocol as well as on the magnetic prehistory of the samples. For the applied magnetic field mu H-0 = 1.93 T, the largest adiabatic temperature change, vertical bar Delta T-ad vertical bar approximate to 0.7 K, has been observed in the Ni35Co15Mn35Al15 sample at T = 464 K.

    In situ microscopic imaging observation was performed on Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 metamagnetic shape memory alloy. Magnetic field-induced reverse martensitic transformation and heating-induced martensitic transformation were directly observed for the first time. The fraction of martensite phase was evaluated by contrast change from micrographs and critical magnetic fields were determined. Isothermal growth of martensite after magnetic field application was also observed. Comparison between the micrographs after the application of a magnetic field and on cooling also revealed the nature of the adiabatic process under a strong driving force.     In superelastic alloys, large deformation can revert to a memorized shape after removing the stress. However, the stress increases with increasing temperature, which limits the practical use over a wide temperature range. Polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Al-Ni shape memory alloys show a small temperature dependence of the superelastic stress because of a small transformation entropy change brought about by a magnetic contribution to the Gibbs energies. For one alloy composition, the superelastic stress varies by 0.53 megapascal/degrees C over a temperature range from -196 to 240 degrees C.

    Magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the martensite phase was investigated in a single crystal of Fe(44)Mn(28)Ga(28) shape memory alloy. It was found that the martensite phase of Fe(44)Mn(28)Ga(28) alloy has a tetragonal distorted L2(1) structure, with a = 0.5368 nm and c = 0.7081 nm. An approximately single variant was obtained by thermomechanical treatment, and magnetization measurement revealed that the c-axis is the magnetic easy axis.     The concentration dependence of magnetic properties in the austenite phase of Ni50Mn50-xInx/2 Sb-x/2 Heusler alloys was systematically investigated by magnetization measurements. The Curie temperature for Ni50Mn50-xInx/2Sbx/2 alloys is almost independent of content x. On the other hand, the concentration dependence on magnetic moment shows a concave curve similar to that of Ni50Mn50-xSnx alloys, which have the same number of valence electrons. This tendency suggests that the magnetic moment continues to increase with decreasing content x and reaches that of the metastable ferromagnetic NiMn-B2 phase. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics.     The concentration dependence of magnetic properties in the austenite phase of NiCoMnIn and NiCoMnSn Heusler alloys was systematically investigated by the magnetization measurements. The T(C) for Ni((50-x))CoxMn((50-y))Sn(y) alloys linearly increases with increasing the Co content and fixed Sn content. Although showing a concave curve for Ni(50)Mn((50-y))Sn(y) ternary alloys, the Sn content-dependence of magnetic moment per formula unit changes from the concave curve to a straight line when Co is substituted for Ni. On the other hand, the In content-dependence of the magnetic moment for Ni(45)Co(5)Mn((50-y))In(y) alloys is perfectly linear as is that in the Ni(50)Mn((50-y))In(y) ternary alloys.     Martensitic and magnetic properties of Ni33.0Co13.4Mn39.7Ga13.9 metamagnetic shape memory alloy were investigated. The kinetic arrest phenomenon was observed at about 120 K by thermomagnetization measurements, and magnetic field-induced transformation (MFIT) was also detected at various temperatures ranging from 4.2 to 300 K. By evaluation of the equilibrium magnetic fields and temperatures based on the transformation fields and temperatures, it was confirmed that the transformation entropy change below 120 K becomes almost zero, which results in the kinetic arrest phenomenon.     Stress-induced martensitic transformation below room temperature for a Ni45Co5Mn36.1In13.9 single-crystal, in which no martensitic transformation occurs during cooling down to 4.2 K under zero stress, was investigated by using compression test. The equilibrium stress estimated from the critical stresses in stress-induced forward and reverse transformations decreased with decreasing temperature, while it became almost constant at temperatures below about 140 K. This anomaly can be explained by the abnormal temperature dependence of the transformation entropy change, which has also been detected by magnetization measurement.

    Metamagnetic shape memory alloy (MMSMA), in which the martensitic transformation temperature can be controlled by a magnetic field, is a new type of magnetic shape memory material. In MMSMAs, because unique physical properties, such as giant magnetoresistance, giant magneto-thermal conductivity and inverse magnetocaloric effects, are observed to be associated with the martensitic transformation, these materials are good candidates for application as actuators and sensors acting in mixed external fields of temperature, stress and magnetic field. In the present Viewpoint, some interesting and unique properties in the MMSMAs are introduced, and some criteria of materials design for practical use are discussed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.     We herein present a review of recent thermodynamic and kinetic studies on Ni-Mn-based magnetic shape memory alloys along with some new data supporting the kinetic discussion. Magnetic phase diagrams and Clausius-Clapeyron relationships are mainly discussed for Ni-Mn-Ga and Ni-Mn-In systems. For the kinetics, a phenomenological model based on Seeger's model is used to describe the temperature dependence of magnetic field hysteresis, as well as the change of hysteresis under different sweeping rates of magnetic fields.

    本創発的研究は、マルテンサイト変態という変位型相変態の中で、約1%以下の微少な変態歪みを示す物をマイクロマルテンサイト変態と定義します。「微小型」でありながらも超磁歪を超え、かつ「微小型」であるからこその超省エネの特性を生かし、将来的に超省エネアクチュエータ、超磁歪材料を超える次世代磁歪材料、高効率次世代磁気冷凍材料および省エネ次世代相変化型メモリー材料の破壊的にイノベーションの創出に挑戦します。

    本研究は研究代表者らが最近開発した高い耐食性および優れた超弾性特性が同時に発現するCo基ホイスラー合金を対象に、超弾性特性および加工性の向上に向けて、日本、ドイツとチェコ、3ヶ国による国際共同研究チームで積層造形技術等を駆使して、テーラーメイド型新規CoCr系超弾性生体材料の開発に挑戦する。 <BR> 2年目は、日本国内においては、生体材料の応用に向けて磁性を低減するために、Co-Cr-(Al,Si)合金の擬3元系状態図を実験的に決定し、キュリー温度が室温以下かつCr濃度の高い組成範囲を絞り込むことができた。また、これらの組成を持つ試料をサイクル熱処理法を用いて単結晶を作製し、チェコ側の共同研究者に送付し、室温付近における弾性率の温度依存性を調査した。さらに、ドイツ側では積層造形技術の応用を目指して、合金の粉末化が成功し、一回目の積層造形試料の作製を行なった。しかし、今年度は新型コロナウィルスの影響で研究代表者がドイツの共同研究先に赴くことができず、研究の進捗状況にやや遅れが生じている。

    本年度はCo系リエントラント・マルテンサイト変態を示す新規形状記憶合金の開発に向けて、第一原理計算による合金系スクリーニングおよび既存合金系の基礎データ構築を行った。 <BR> 分担者辻川助教と連携し、3元Co2YZホイスラー合金の相安定性およびマルテンサイト変態の可能性を評価し、磁気特性および電子構造も調査した。これらの結果に基づき、来年度マルテンサイト変態の可能性について実験的に確かめる予定である。 <BR> 現在のところ、リエントラント・マルテンサイト変態を示す合金系はCo2Cr(Ga,Si)のみであるが、Co2Cr(Ga,Si)合金においてもホイスラー相の存在範囲および、マルテンサイト変態とリエントラント・マルテンサイト変態の出現組成領域は分からなかった。本年度は本合金系において、Ga:Siを1:1に固定した擬3元系状態図を実験的に決定した。その結果、ホイスラー相は広い組成範囲において存在し、ホイスラー相のキュリー温度は室温以下の低温から600 Kの高温まで分布していることが分かった。また、今までのGa+Si=22断面以外でも、新たにマルテンサイト変態およびリエントラント・マルテンサイト変態を示す合金を見つけることが出来、来年度その詳細について調査する予定である。

    最近、本研究グループはCo基ホイスラー合金において冷却による形状記憶効果を見出した。しかし、Co基ホイスラー合金では形状記憶効果に必要な熱弾性型マルテンサイト(M)変態はほとんど報告がない。本研究では新たにM変態を示す合金系を探索し、Co-V-Ga形状記憶合金を開発した。また、限られた合金組成において磁性がM変態時に大きく変化する、異常なマルテンサイト変態挙動を見出すことに成功した。

  11. カイネティックアレスト現象の解明とその応用

    本研究の主な目的は、メタ磁性形状記憶合金において特定の温度でマルテンサイト変態が停止するカイネティックアレスト(KA)現象の起源を調査し、またKA現象の応用を探索することである。以前の研究報告によると、KA現象は平衡論的にマルテンサイト変態の駆動力が温度の低下に伴ってゼロに近づく熱力学的現象と、カイネティックス的にマルテンサイト変態における変態ヒステリシスが温度の低下に伴って広がる動力学的現象、二つの物理現象によるものだと考えられる。本年度では、それぞれの物理現象の起源解明を目的とし、研究を行った。 強磁性形状記憶合金であるNiMnGaにCoを置換することで、NiCoMnGa合金でKA現象が出現することが先行研究によって知られている。そこで、本年度はNi_<50>.、Co_xMn_<50-y>Ga_y合金系を用いて、Co添加によるKA温度の変化を系統的に調査することと共に、CoとGa組成を変数とした磁気相図も決定した。その結果、Coの添加に伴って、KA温度が上昇する傾向が見られた。また、NiCoMnIn系合金のKA温度が130Kであることに対して、19%のCoを添加した合金でKA温度が室温付近まで上昇し、NiMn基合金で最も高いKA温度を得ることに成功した。この結果はCIMTECで発表し、これから論文に投稿する予定である。 なお、磁場ヒステリシスの変化といった動力学的調査も行った。NiCoMnInとNiCoMnAlといった磁場ヒステリシス温度依存性の異なるサンプルを用いて、温度変化および磁場印加による光顕組織の変化をその場で観察した。その結果、組織でも区別が見られ、またその区別を動力学的原因を考慮したモデルで説明することができた。この結果は秋期金属学会で発表し、Mater.Transに掲載された。その一方、定常磁場、準定常磁場とパルス磁場といった異なる掃引速度の磁場を用いて磁化測定を行い、磁場ヒステリシスの変化が見られた。また、カイネティックスの影響を考えると、半定量的にその変化を説明することができた。この結果はNon-ergodic現象におけるワークショップで発表し、これから論文も投稿する予定である。
